THE Otago Daily Times. "Inveniam viam aut faciam." DUNEDIN, THURSDAY, JUNE 26, 1862. PRIZE DESIGN FOR A BENEVOLENT ASYLUM.

SEVENTY-ONE YEARS AGO.

rPHE Committee of the Benevolent A Asylum is prepared to receive plans for a building of brink or stone, for the purposes of the Institution, one wing of which to be erected now, is not to cost more than £2OOO, and to have accommodation for not less than 30 male inmates and 15 female inmates, together With a large dining hall, and quarters for Superintendent and Matron. Should the designer of the successful Elan not be appointed to superintend the uilding, a premium of £25 will be paid to him for it. . . . By order of the Committee, „ EDWARD HARDCASTLE, Hon. Secretary.

Our correspondent at Tokomairiro draws attention to the want of a registry of the brands of cattle, of the same nature as that for the brands of sheep. It, certainly seems a strange oversight that nothing of the kind should exist. There is no social luxury of late years that has come so much into request as the Turkish Bath. . . . Otago, as yet, does not boast of a single establishment, for public baths. We believe one for hot and shower baths is in course of erection, but will no one have the enterprise to undertake the erection of Turkish Baths ? A sort of guarantee might be obtained by a number of persons undertaking in advance to become subscribers. We are glad to observe that the subjectof a road through the Island is attracting attention. . . . From inquiries we have made, we believe that if this province does its portion there will be little difficulty in getting the other provinces to do theirs. We are sorry to learn that the road which is being made between Dunedin and Waikouaiti is little better than a bridle track, and that it will be quite useless for carriage traffic. We cannot too earnestly recommend that it should at once be widened. The expense of doing so now that it is in course of formation will be trivial compared to what it will cost afterwards, and that it will have to be done at some time or other no one can doubt. We should be glad to see public action taken in the matter ; assuredly the public are much interested in it.
