OTAGO CLUB. Fine but threatening weather prevailed when the Otago Athletic and Cycling Club held its sixth race of the Beale Cup series from Beale’s Hotel, Green Island, to North Taieri and return via Wingatui. The starters were as follows: —G. Seasley, J. Holt 10 minutes, F. Beale, I. Guthrie 9, W. Lucas, B. Thomas BJ. G. Milligan, M. Paul 6J, A. H. Brown, W. Garnon 4J, G. Kennedy 4, M. Cannon 2J, T. Brosuan and A. J. Brown IJ. The limit men left at 2.50. At the Coach and Horses on the outward journey Paul, riding well, dropped Milligan, who was having his first ride with the professional club. Ducas and Thomas had also picked up Beale and Guthrie at this stage, and the order over Saddle Hill was Heasley and Holt about 300 yards ahead of Lucas, Guthre, Beale, and Thomas. The two limit men were riding strongly, especially Heasley, and he led Holt round the turn at 3.19, still 300 yards ahead of the next bunch, who turned at 3.20 with Lucas in the van. Then came Paul at 3.21, riding on his own and going very well. Garnon and Brown turned at 3.22, but were not riding well together, and were followed by Kennedy and Cannon at 3.24. Cannon was riding very well, and had done good work to pick up Kennedy, and looked like getting fastest time. On the return trip Heasley and Holt were still holding their own at Mosgiel, but Brown had drawn out from Gannon and Paul. Up Saddle Hill, Heasley rode very strongly, and led Holt over the top by 150 yards, and then came Lucas, 10 yards further back, with Guthrie and Thomas just behind him, and Brown coming fakt. Paul and Garnon were well back, but Cannon and Kennedy were going well together, and had gained a lot of ground on the leaders, Heasley was over the hill at the Coach and Horses when the second bunch, who had picked up Holt, were at the bottom, and coming through Fairfield he was going easily, being content to hold his advantage, and ultimately rode home an easy winner by 200 yards. Guthrie left his bunch at the Brighton road, and led Lucas home by two lengths to gain second place. Then came Thomas, Holt, A. H. Brown, Beale, and Cannon. The official placings were: —G. Heasley, riding time 47min 9sec, 1; I. Guthrie, riding time 47min, 2; W. Lucas, riding time 4Gmin 33sec, 3; B. Thomas, riding time 46min 38sec, 4. M. Cannon gained fastest time with 43min 33sec, and A. H. Brown second fastest in 44min 33sec. The controlling officials were Messrs G. M'Queen, A. Holmes, A. Wills, D. Heenan, J. Wilson, A. Jackson. Thanks are due to Mr J. Beale for the use of his dressing rooms. A fast .pace on the outward journey was maintained. Laws turning for home half a minute before J. Kiiner, with B. Oakes and Schemltz fourth. The scratch men —Hay and M'Callum—turned two minutes later. C. Gilchrist and T. Dazler, who crashed, retired. At the swamp bridge Kiiner and Laws were leading A. Oakes, J. Kewish, and Balaton, who were riding very well, by half a minute, with G. Foster one minute back. The rest of the field were well strung out at this stage, with J. Blackie and E. Blair teaming well. The scratch men were well back but were setting a steady clip. J. Kiiner dropped Laws at Green Island Bush and was never headed, finishing alone three-quarters of minute ahead of V.
