CONTROL OF WHITE BUTTERFLY

WORK AT RESEARCH STATION REMARKABLE SUCCESS ACHIEVED. (Per United Press Association.) PALMERSTON N. t June 24. Mr J. Muggeridge, Government entomologist at the plant research station, stated to-day that there was now strong ground for the belief that the white butterfly would eventually be effectively controlled by its natural enemies. The success achieved in establishing pupal parasites of the pest in Hawke’s Bay was by far the most promising and most significant development since the work of control was started. It appeared that one parasite at least was making its presence felt to a remarkable degree. It was not anticipated at this juncture that anything more would be found than possjbly a few parasitical puparia in the field. It was, therefore, astounding to find 56 per cent, collected quite at random in the vicinity of the crops where the liberations were made earlier. Only 2 or 3 p*r cent, was expected.
