AUSTRALIAN SCANDALS
TO THE EDITOR. Sir, —In to-day’s issue of your paper a correspondent signing himself as “ Worker ” glibly refers to the scandals in Australia. Even in this fair country we have had enough evidence of the lengths to which certain people will go for political purposes, and so far as I can discover some of these so-called scandals wore concocted for electioneering. I understand that these matters were investigated in the law courts, and from the findings of those courts we shall be more likely to find the truth than from hearsay. Now, Sir, “ Worker ” professes to know about these things, so I would like to ask him some questions:— 1. Did the Australian courts find that any politicians were guilty of improper action ? 2. If so, whom and what action ? I would like an answer in reference to each of the three things he mentioned — tin-hare licenses, fruit machines, and Mungana leases. I do not want quotations from any bigoted witnesses on either side. I want the findings of the courts. Also, did not Mr Stevens, the present Premier, admit that he had paid a man a sum pf money in order to encourage that man to tell the truth at the tin-hare inquiry? . I have noticed that “Worker” avoids any awkward questions that Dr M'Millan asks him. but I don’t want, him to be afraid to answer my search after truth. — I am, etc., ' Capitalist. Waitaki Hydro, June 21. [The “tin hare” scandal and the fruit machine scandal were investigated by commissions, not by courts. There was no admission by the present Premier of New South Wales of the nature attributed to him. — Ed., O.T.D.]
