BALCLUTHA DISTRICT NEWS (From Oue Own Correspondent.) BALCLUTHA, June 22. A SEVERE FROST. Very severe frosts have characterised this week. Yesterday was perhaps the coldest day of the year,' ‘and even at places so near the Sea coast as Paretai the ground was frozen hard to a depth of several inches. In Balclutha, notwithstanding the severity of the frost, there have not been so many burst water pipes as is usual in mid-winter. PERSONAL. Mr J. W. Lopdell, headmaster of the Owaka District High School for some years, has been appointed headmaster at Bluff, and will commence his new duties on July 24. While in Owaka Mr Lopdell has been very highly thought of as teacher and citizen. ■r'-.'Z, Word was received in Balclutha of the death this morning of an old exresident in the person of Mr A. R. Lattimore, at the age of 67. Mr Lattimore was in business as a tailor in , Balclutha for over 30 years, and three years ago removed with his wife and family to a small farm at Wbakatu, near Hastings, Hawke’s Bay. Some months ago he was an inmate of Napier Hospital for a short time, but his final illness occurred at his home at Wbakatu. Mr Lattimore was a member of the Masonic and Oddfellows’ Lodges, and he took a keen interest in sport. He was a good bowler in his day, and remarkably keen on the sport of angling, being one of the most successful of the Molyneux River anglers. He leaves a widow and grown-np family of three (two boys and a girl). REDUCED RATES. The Balclutha Borough Council has resolved, subject to formal confirmation at the next meeting, to make a reduction in the total rates of 2A per cent. The reduction in the consolidated rate will be about 5 per cent, and the water rate is being reduced from 24 per cent, to 2 per cent, on the annual value.
