THE Otago Daily Times. "Inveniam viam aut faciam.” DUNEDIN, SATURDAY, JUNE 21, 1862. Shipping Intelligence.

SEVENTY-ONE YEARS AGO.

PORT CHALMERS.— June 20,

The Wild Wave, from Stewart’s Island, reached this port in the afternoon shortly before the Jane, bringing a cargo of Stewart Island timber, and a Quantity of fish smoked by Mr. Harold, fisherman, there. Capt. Simpson reports that on Thursday week two distinct shocks of earthquake were felt in Stewart’s Island. The earthquake occurred in the evening, and about the same time there were some peals, of thunder and lightning flashes, as was the case on the same evening in this province, the shocks were so distinct as to be felt on board the Wild Wave, which was at the time lying aground in Paterson’s Inlet, and on shore they were remarked by almost the entire population.

The subject of female immigration is attracting a large share of public attention in England, and various projects for the furtherance of that object are being initiated. It appears, however, as far as we can judge from the newspapers, that whilst the various colonies of Australia, and Tasmania, are mentioned as most desirable fields for the great surplusage of population, the superior advantages of New Zealand have been entirely overlooked.

On Wednesday evening last, a party of bathers went to the Ocean Beach to enjoy a swim. One of the number, however, narrowly escaped drowning, having been seized with cramp in the legs when out of his depth. We would recommend bathers to be very cautious, for at this season the extreme coldness of the water is very liable to produce cramp. The works in connection with the levelling of Manse-street and part of Highstreet, are being proceeded with, and it can now be seen how seriously some of the buildings will be affected in consequence. The Melbourne Club Hotel Is thrown about four feet below the street level, and Messrs R. B. Martin’s old store is also much too low. We believe it is intended to screw up the latter building to the proper height, but this can hardly be done so eeasily with Mrs Dawson’s hotel. The Athenamra, being built back from the road, has been protected by a stone wall, outside which the road has been filled up. ,
