MONTHLY COUNCIL MEETING The monthly meeting of the Waihemo County Council was held yesterday at the county office, Palmerston. Cr A. Purvis occupied the chair, and there were also present, Crs J. O’Connell, G. Ross, A. J. Ireland, W. Matheson, D, Ross, W. Ritchie, G. Cferk. and H. S. Sheat., ■ ; : REPORTS. The, county clerk submitted the following report: —-• Bushey Riding.—A ’ two-foot concrete culvert is required and the road should be raised for a chain on either side of the culvert as there is at present no fall for the water. Goodwood Riding.—General surface work has been done and Bobby’s Head and School road have been graded. Maintenance gravel will be required on the former road and also on Stookland road and Goodwood settlement road. Dunback Riding.—General surface work has been done and maintenance gravel is required on about 200 yards of the main highway. Green Valley Riding.—ln addition to general surface work crossings and creeks have received attention. Macraes Riding.—General surface work has been done and the metal has been blinded and raked in. Maintenance rock has been quarried and carted out on Ross road. Blue Mountain ' Riding.—M'Bndc’s road and the Switchback road .have been graded and general surface work has been attended to. The latter road requires pipes across near the willows, and the banks also require to be lowered as it at present obstructs the view. Maintenance gravel is needed on the main highway and on Wilson’s road. Meadowbank Riding.—M’Elwee’s road was graded and the water tables were cleaned out. Maintenance gravel is required on Hughes’s road and also on Taieri Peak road. The report was adopted. The ranger .reported that three head of cattle had been found wandering In Meadowbank Riding, —Received.

The traffic inspector reported that the county bad been patrolled regularly. One driver had been prosecuted for exceeding the speed limit and wandering cattle had been removed from the main highways.—Received. CORRESPONDENCE. Mrs J. M'Rae (Hartfield) wrote asking that the road from Eillyburn to her homestead should be gravelled. It was decided to inform the writer that the matter would receive attention at an early date. The district telegraph engineer (Dunedin) wrote directing attention to the danger threatening telephone lines in the event of fire occurring in the gorse which was being allowed to grow on an extensive roadside area in the county. —It was decided to write to the occupier of the land concerned asking that the matter should receive attention. The Otago Hospital Board advised that the levy on the county for the current year would be £ll4B 17a 9d. —Received. The Unemployment Board advised that trees would shortly be available to local bodies for planting and w'ould be forwarded on payment of lifting, packing and freight charges. Orders must be for 2000 or more trees. —It was decided to order 2000 trees.

The Public Works Department wrote stating that funds would again be short this year and only urgent w’orks should be applied for by local bodies.—lt was decided to apply for a £SO subsidy for work on Nenthorn road. RATES STRUCK.

In accordance with his notice of motion Cr J. O’Connell moved—“ That a general rate for the whole of the county of in the £ be struck for the current year.”—The clerk submitted a full report on the financial situation of the county and after some discussion the motion was carried.

It was decided that the same hospital’ rate as last year be struck and that no rate be levied for the Switchback road bridge loan. FINANCE.

Accounts amounting to £519 16s 7d were passed for payment.
