MAJESTIC PICTURES When shown here previously, “On Our Selection ".proved to be so popular with Oamaru picture patrons that hundreds could not obtain admission, hence a return season wac arranged ■ for,/and it will be shown to-day at a special matinee, tonight, and Wednesday night. CORPUS CHRISTI PROCESSION The annual procession of the Blessed Sacrament was held in the beautiful grounds of St. Kevin’s College, Redcastle, on Sunday afternoon. The weather was idea] for outdoor ceremonial, and so the vafkus schools and associations of the Catholic community of the district were fully represented in the procession. The Erocessionists in order were:—Cross earers and acolytes, boys of St. Thomas s Academy, : St. , Joseph’s School, Teschemakers’ Convent pupils. Children of Mary, choir, St. Patrick’s School, St. Kevin’s College, Hibernian Society, Holy Name Society, altar boys, Christian Brothers, and officiating clergy. The beautiful setting of the grounds was further enhanced by a number, of arches erected across the route of , the procession. Unity was given to the singing from end to end of the procession by the Mounted Rifles’ Band, which played all the accompaniments. Two open-air altars were erected, from which / the benediction was given. The Very Rev. s Father O’Reilly bore #J ,the Blessed SacraI ment along the route' and gave benedic--1 tion. He was assisted by the Rev. Fathers Donegan and Walls. The_ whole function was highly devotional and impressive. KUROW GUN CLUB The Kurow Gun Club held a very successful shoot on Waiting! Station under ideal weather conditions, the members being the guests at luncheon of Mr J. A. Sutton.- There were about 20 gun/ and a good bag of hares was secured.

ACTIVITIES OF THE DISTRICT.

UNEMPLOYMENT COMMITTEE The weekly meeting of the Unemployment Committee was held yesterday morning, the Mayor (Mr M. F. Cooney) presiding. The following applications from farmers in North Otago for unemployed labour under scheme No. 4a were approved:—Georgetown, one man, 10g per week; Omarama, one man, ss; Ngapara, one man, ss; Enfield, one man, ss; Duntroon, one man, ss; Tokarahi, one man, ss. An extension of time was granted a farmer at Windsor. The Labour Bureau officer (Mr S. E. M'Gregor) reported that at the end of the previous week there were 385 registered unemployed. ■ Since then 38 hew applications were received, two sent to the Hydro Works, 12 received private employment, and five names were removed, leaving a total of 404 at the end of last week. OAMARU HARRIER CLUB , The results of the annual Two Miles Club Handicap are as follow:—A. Aikenhead (scr) 1, W. Walsh (120yds) 2, 0. Evans (160yds) 3, R. Milne (180yds) 4. H. Cameron (240yds) 5, K. Martyn (390yds) 6. Time, lOmin 36 l-ssec. .. Before a number of spectators the large field got away to a good start. Aikenhead and Walsh struck a fast pace, and commenced to reduce the large ga.p between themselves and the pack. The limit men, however, hung on well, and both K. Martyn and B. Ross (340yds) were still a good distance ahead when the first lap of nearly three-quarters of a mile was covered. By this time Carson, Walsh, and Aikenhead were running with the pack, in which K. Martyn, Milne, Evans, and Cameron were prominent. Crawford, Familton, and Smith had dropped back some distance. At the completion of the second lap the order was Aikenhead; Walsh, Carson, Evans, Milne, and Cameron. On leaving the turn Aikenhead clapped on the pace and was soon well ahead of Wash. At this stage Carson : dropped out,' and Mine slowly closed in on Evans, with Cameron running evenly further back. Aikenhead was content to run at a steady pace down the finishing straight, and won without effort. Walsh also came in without being pressed, and was a good distance ahead of Evans, who led Milne by aboutTs_yards. Cameron, who rah well, came in with a good finish, to be followed by Martyn, Lee, and Halvorsen, each of whom ran a solid race. Considering the rough and heavy track, the time of the race was Very good. Next Saturday the club will hold a combined run from St. Paul’s with the Mornington Club, of Dunedin. NEW ZEALAND LEGION During‘the past week the public acticities of the Oamaru Division of the New Zealand Legion have been confined to a well-attended public meeting held at Diihtroon and arranging meetings* at Other centres. ' Invitations for the inaugural meeting for the formation of study circles in Oamaru, are already in the hands of all members of the legion in this division, and this movement is attracting widespread attention. Interested nonmembers are being invited by advertisement. The completion of the centres in the southern portion of the division will advance matters sufficiently to enable the divisional council to be formed and place the organisation of the Oamaru Division on a permanent, instead of a provisional basis, which has been the position up to the present. V'. WAITAKI DAM The sheet piling in the upstream wall of the coffer dam on the Otago side of the river is now completed, the last pile being driven on Thursday. The river is thus flowing through the temporary sluice gates on the Canterbury side. A start has been made in driving the sheet.piling in the downstream wall, and if the present rate of progress is maintained the wall should he completed within the next week in readiness for pumping out the coffer dam and the building of the final, section of the dam. FUNCTION AT ENFIELD; Mrs Bradley and the ladies who had assisted her at the “bring and buy” sale in aid of the school funds were entertained at a social evening by the Enfield School Committee and: staff in the school. A very enjoyable evening was spent in games and folk dances, Miss Hopkinson supplying excellent music. On behalf of the ladies Miss Bradley thanked Mr and Mrs Findlay, Misses Hopkinson arid Kidd, and the committee for their, hospitality. Messrs Findlay and Rowlands and Mesdames Joiner and Findlay suitably replied. OBITUARY The death occurred at Dunedin on Sunday of Mrs Reid, a former resident of Oamaru, and the mother of Mr Joe Reid, of Oamaru, whose friends will sympathise with him in his bereavement. Mrs Reid was horn in Londonderry, Ireland, and arrived in New Zealand in 1874. She was very highly respected, and was an active worker for her church. She was predeceased by her husband 13. years ago. The only surviving members of the family are Mr Joe Reid (Oamaru) and Mrs Tressider (Port Chalmers). OAMARU FIRE BOARD The quarterly meeting of the Oamaru Fire Board was held yesterday afternoon, Mr J, M. Forrester occupying the chair. A welcome was extended to Mr J. R. Callender, as a member of the board, in place of Mr D. J. Calder, retired. Accounts totalling £IBO 15s sd. were passed for payment. ’ I ' The superintendent of the Oamaru Fire Brigade (Mr T. Herron), in hie quarterly report, stated that, the members, of, the brigade continued to take great interest in their duties. The roll stood at 19 active firemen and the honorary surgeon, this being the full roll. The average attendance of members had been as follows; —Fires, 12; meetings, 15; practices, 14. Fire alarms had been responded to. but damage had been very slight, except for a cottage in Yare street, which had been totally destroyed. The fire had had a good hold when the brigade-'was called, and a poor supply of water prevented the brigade from effecting a save. Deputy superintendent Hinkley had completed 25 years of service as a member of the brigade, which entitled him to receive the gold star service honour, which would be presented at the annual social on July 10. The report contained 1 a statement of the cost of' lighting and heating for the past two years, which showed that big economies had been The Oamaru Borough Council advised that Mr F. Crawshaw and Mr J. M. Forrester had been' appointed its representatives on the board. . The Minister of Internal Affairs advised that the personnel of the board, in addition to the two members mentioned, was Messrs J. A. Macpherson, M.P. (appointed by the GovernorGeneral). J. R. The Loans Department advised that the board’s loan of £BSO for five years was approved, and the National Bank of New Zealand advised that/ arrangements had been made for the loan. It was decided that the tender of the Duplex Fire Alarm Company for supplying a fire alarm system for Oamaru be accepted. The monthly meeting of the , North Otago Society for the Prevention of Cruelly to Animals was held last night in St. Luke’s vicarage. The, president .(Mr W. K. Tomlinson) occupied the chair. The inspector (Mr T. Green) reported having inspected three cases where horses that were too old had been worked, and had to be destroyed. NORTH OTAGO RUGBY UNION The weekly meeting of the North Otago Rugby Union was held last night, the president (Mr H, E. Wedde) occupying the chair. The following re-gradings were granted: —A. Robertson, Old Boys’ juniors, to Third Grade; A. Tempero and E, Goodall, Excelsior juniors, to Third Grade; C. Palmer and B. Halkett, Athletic seniors, to juniors. The transfer of A. Stichman, Shag Point, to Athletic, was granted. The application of the Livingstone School for a school'football was granted. It wag decided to invite St. Kevin’s College to withdraw St. Kevin’s A from the Fifth Grade competition, and to enter that team in the Fourth Grade competition. . ' ' Owing to the Athletic team's lead in the Fourth Grade competition, it was decided to close that competition. Athletic being declared the winners. It was decided to open a new competition of two rounds in the Fourth Grade, a match football being given as a trophy. A letter was received from St. Kevin’s College in reference to its Third Grade team, and it was decided to take no action on the question of grading the team. Eastern Districts (Palmerston) wrote inviting the North Otago Union to send a team representative of the Oamaru clubs to play Eastern Districts at Palmerston on July 1. As the date clashed with the final round of the senior fixtures it was decided to reply that the union regretted that it was unable to send a team to Palmerston on the fiate suggested.,’ ; The Waitaki Sub-union wrote suggesting that August 19 was too late in the season for the return Town v. Country match at Duntroon, and asked that the match be' played on August 5. Owing to the Knockout Competition, being set down for August 5, it was decided to request the sub-union to adhere to August 19 for the fixture. . ■ . , . It was decided to circularise the clubs, requesting them to provide extra uniforms at the grounds'in view of the loss of time in matches through replacing uniforms. •* - '■ It was reported that a player last Saturday suffered a serious wound through the hand from a boot spike, and it was decided that the members of the Management Committtee assist the referees to carry oiit a thorough inspection of studs on players’ boots. MAHENO SCHOOL COMMITTEE In order to augment the funds of the Maheno School Committee, it has been decided to hold fortnightly progressive euchre tournaments, the first held in the Maheno Hall being well attended. The winners were Mrs F. Townsley and Mr James M'Leod, jun. Consolation prizes Went to. Miss P. Weir and Mr B. Kelcher. Mr A. Watson (chairman) pre,sented the prizes. Dancing was afterwards indulged in. Messrs R. Byers and W. Yorston carried out the duties of M.C.’s. The secretary (Mr J. Rapson) announced that the next tournament would be held on July 1, and thereafter fortnightly during the winter months.
