OTAGO AMATEUR CLUB. The Otago Amateur Cycling Club held the second of a series of three races for the Lanham Cup, from Beale's Hotel, Green Island, to Allanton and back. Ihe race resulted in another win for the promising young Otago Club rider, Morris Paterson, with J. Kilner second, both these riders having a.great contest in the sprint home. The limit riders were despatched 7Jmin in front of the four scratch men, Hansen, Hay, Gilchrist, and M'Callum. Hay and gone only 200yds when his back wheel slipped over, _and he had to dismount and fix it, losing 2min on his comarkers and riding practically all the way on his own. B. Oakes and Gordon, Munday'led round the turn at Allanton, followed shortly by a bunch consisting of Paterson, Kilner, Greenfield, and Laws, then Foster and Sinclair, who were followed by Hansen, Gilchrist, and M'Callum (who were losing time on the 2min bunch), with Hay following, riding gamely on his own. Paterson, and Greenfield caught the front men. and were setting a great pace. A good finish between Paterson and Kilner resulted in Paterson just getting home, being followed by Ralston and Greenfield. The official placings "were:—Morris Paterson I, Jack Kilner 2, I. The Athletic and Cycling Club were again favoured with ideal weather conditions for the fifth race of the Beale Cup series. The course was over the Main South' road from Beale's Hotel, Green Island, to Otokia and return, a distance of 26 miles. The starters were:—W. Lucas, I. Guthrie llmin, A. C. E. Wills 8, M. Paul, W. Garnon 7, A. H. Brown 6, G. Kennedy, R. Wilson-Pyne 5, M. Cannor>. 4£, T. Brosnan, J. Brown 2. On the outward trip A. H. Brown caught Paul and Garnon at Saddle Hill, and this bunch set a fast clip and overtook A. C. E. Wills at East Taieri. Wilson-Pyne left Kennedy at Saddle Hill, and Gannon then joined Kennedy. Brown led Paul, Garnon, and Wills through Riccarton in chase of the limit men, Lucas and Guthrie, who were teaming well and more than holding their own at this stage, Lucas led Guthrie round the turn at 3.42 p.m., having put «p the good time of 38min on the outward trip. Wills next led Paul, Garnon, and A. H. Brown round at 3.44 p.m. They were going well. Then came Wilson-Pyne. Kennedy, and Cannon at 3.46 p.m. The virtual scratch men, J. Brown and T. Brosnan, turned at 3.49 p.m., having lost 30 seconds to Cannon. At Allanton, Lucas and Guthrie were a quarter of a mile in front of Garnon, Paul, Wills, and Brown, with Cannon, Wil ß °nPyne, and Kennedy about the same distance back. Nine riders were on Saddle Hill at the same time. Lucas dropped Guthrie on the climb, and Garnon left his bunch also. The order over the top Lucas, Garnon, Guthrie, and Brown at 20yds intervals, with Wills, Paul, Cannon, and Kennedy next, Wilson-Pyne well back, and the two back-markers not yet in-sight. ''.__'■'• Lucas still led at the Coach and Horses, with Garnon just behind, and Guthrie and Brown together a little further back. Wills, Paul, Cannon, and Kennedy had bunched, and were coming fast. Lucas had Garnon on his wheel at the Brickworks, and Brown here passed Guthrie, with Cannon's bunch just about ISO.yards back. At the Brighton road Luca ß and Garnon were abreast, and there was seen the uncommon spectacle of. the club's youngest and oldest riders fighting out a desperate finish, in which; youth prevailed, Garnon crossing the line a length ahead of Lucas, with Brown 50 yards back. Then came Guthrie, and 10 yards back Cannon led Kennedy, Wills, and Paul to the finish. . The official placings were:— W. Garnon (riding • time lhr 15min 10 W. CONTROL OF SPORT. ATTITUDE OF FEDERATION. (Per United Press Association.) CHRISTCHURCH, June 17. Replying, to the Cycling Council's ultimatum, Mr W. J. Walter, a leading member of the New. Zealand Cycling federation, says that it intends to continue to control cash and amateur cycling in the Dominion, despite the endeavours of_ a Wellington group to gain control. The federation's policy is unshaken. The Cycling Council was now trying to upset a body which it had been instrumental in forming. The federation would discuss the whole matter at a meeting on June 28. v,
