CITY POLICE COURT

Saturday, June 17. (Before Mr J. R. Bartholomew, S.M.) DRUNKENNESS. A female first offender, charged with drunkenness, was fined 20a, in default 48 hours' imprisonment. A. FOOLISH ACT. Ernest Hope Vincent and Ronald Richards appeared for sentence on a charge of stealing six electric light globes valued at 10s Gd each, the property of some persons unknown. —Senior Sergeant Mac Lean said that the two accused had been found in South Dunedin early in the morning with a • large electric light -globe in their possession. Inquiries elicited the fact that they had taken this and five other globes from shop doorways. —Mr E. A. Hamer, who appeared for the two accused, stated that neither was of the criminal type, and asked that the court should deal as leniently as possible with them. They had been drinking during the evening, and their act wa s one of drunken folly and the result of a mischievous impulse.—After perusing the probation officer's report, which spoke favourably of each of the accused, the magistrate ordered them • both to be detained in the Borstal Institute,for two years. ADMITTED TO PROBATION. Robert Cochrane, who was represented by Mr E. A. Hamer. appeared for sentence on a charge of having stolen the sum of £l2 10s sd, the property of Thomas Diw>n Dalziell.—Chief Detective Young explained that the accused, who was employed on the complainant's milk run, had received various sums of money to pay to his employer, but he had failed to do this, and had devoted the amounts to his own use.—Mr iHamer asked that on account of the accused's youth the court should extend the benefits of probation to him., The probation officer's report showed that he was a very industrious lad, and be was well spoken of by his employer.—The accused was admitted to probation for two years, restitution to be made as directed by the probation officer.
