MIDDLEMARCH NOTES (From Our Own Correspondent.) MIDDLEMARCH, June 16. A. AND P. BANQUET. One of the most successful functions in the history of the A. and P. Society was held in the society's hall on Thursday evening, the occasion being the celebration of the thirty-second anniversary of the society and the presentation of trophies which were won at the show on Easter Monday. The usual custom of holding a smoke concert was departed from and this year it was decided to hold a banquet instead, and the wisdom of this decision was shown by the large number of members and friends who attended. One hundred and seventy-five sat down to dinner and the tables were laid out in a very artistic and elaborate manner by the ladies. The president, Mr D. Roberts, was in the chair. The following hon. life members were present:—Messrs J. Robertson (the only remaining member of the first committee of management), F. Atkinson, W. D. Mason, W. Robertson, J. T. Tisdall, E. J. Docherty and Con O'Neil. Amongst the visitors present were Mr W. A. Bodkin, M.P.; Mr R. Kirk, vice-president, of the Otago A. and P. Society; Mr A. F. Duthie, secretary of the Otago A. and P. Society; Mr J. Fowler, president, and Mr J. Williamson, secretary Taieri A. and P. Society. / ' • The president made reference to the operations of the *society during the past 32 years and to the present satisfactory financial position. He also extended a hearty welcome to all present. During the evening the following toasts were honoured:—"The King," proposed by Mr F. J. Keast; "The Strath-Taieft A. and P. Society," proposed by Mt W. Robertson ; " The President," .proposed by Mr W. A. Bodkin; " Parliament," proposed by Mr W. D. Mason and responded to by Mr Bodkin; " The Exhibitors," proposed by Mr W. Moynihan and responded to by Messrs T. Carruthers, D./B. Craighead and F. 0. Glover; "The Judges," proposed by Mr A. Carruthers and responded to by Mr P. Law; " Kindred Societies," proposed by Mr J. T. James and responded to by Messrs R. Kirk, A. F. Duthie, J. Fowler and J. Williamson ; and "The Ladies," proposed by Mr W. S. Williams and responded to by Messrs Bodkin and A. Glover. The special prizes were presented as follows: ~ , The William Moynihan Memorial Shield for most points won at the show—Mr Andrew Carruthers. The Silver Cup for most points in the Friesiah cattle section —Mr W. W. Garrett. Gold medal presented by the Otago branch of the New Zealand Friesian Association for the best bull—Mr W. W. On the motion of Mr James Howell a hearty vote '■ of thanks was accorded the secretary (Mr E. W. Messent) and the Banquet Committee for the most successful manner in which the arrangements were carried out. Dancing was indulged in to excellent music supplied by Dagg's Band, Mr W..S. Williams "acting as M.C. in his usual efficient manner. , • BUSINESS CHANGE. The butchery business established in 1907 and carried on since then by Mr W. Bennett has been taken over by Mr J. M'Master, of Dunedin, Mr Bennett going to reside on his property at Cottesbrook. ■ . THE WEATHER. Perfect winter weather prevails, with frost at night and bright, sunny days. The frost is not sufficiently hard to stop the teams, the glass is steady at 30.20, and the indications are for a continuation of frost.
