BALCLUTHA DISTRICT NEWS (From Our Own Correspondent.) BALCLUTHA, June 18. POULTRY CLUB. The show of the Clutha Poultry, Pigeon, and Canary. Club was concluded last night. The attendance on both days was very good, and great interest was manifested in the various exhibits. Additional special prize-winners are as follows: —W. Keen (Balclutha), cup for best light utility bird: Calder M'Kenzie, Rhode Island Red pullet, special and R.I.R. cup; Graham Riach, silver cup for best utility bird (child's exhibit); Edna Barron (Caversham), miniature cup for best bantam; W. Proudfoot (Benhar), silver cup for best heavy utility bird in show; Mrs F. Tomlin (Kaka Point), special for best canary in ladies' or children's section. The sheep-guessing competition (691 b correct dressed weight) was won by Messrs W. Keen and C. M'Kenzie (equal), the pig competition by Mrs Arnold, and the cake competition by Mr G. W. Guest. The door prize has yet to be drawn. PRICE OF TURNIPS. Although £lO per acre for turnips for eating-off purposes has been a common price in this district this season, the heavier crops have been sold for as much as £l2 10s an acre. In fact, one local agency has disposed of no less than 150 acres at the higher price. The crops are chiefly located in the Inch CluthaStirling district.. At Paretai also £l2 10s ■ an acre was the price given for at least one. area. RUGBY FOOTBALL. The final of the third grade banner between South Otago. High School and Toko District High School, played on the Show Ground, Balclutha, yesterday, resulted in a win for the home team by 9 points to 6. The game was fast throughout. South Otago High School had the better pack of forwards, Cunliffe, Anderson, and Hall showing up well. Among the backs G. James (South Otago) and M Kinney and Oliver (Toko) showed up best. Clutha seniors played Star at Stirling, the game ending in a draw, 3 points each. Crescent seniors played Clinton at Clinton, the visitors winning by 22 points to 7. On the Balclutha ground Clutha II were defeated by Valley by 32 points to 5. COURSING. The South Otago Coursing Club held a meeting at Otanomomo yesterday, when 10 dogs went to the slips. The weather was dull and cold, and the ground very damp. Results: June £5 Limit Stake. Ten flogs at £1 each (for dogs that had not won more than £5 in any one stake). First £5, second £2, third £l. First Round. A. E. Smith's Peter Pan. easily defeated C. Marks's Merry Lad. The latter led by two lengths, but was outclassed in a long course. A. E. Smith's Black Thorn led F. Johnstone's Shipmate by three lengths. The latter turned twice and drove to cover. 11. M'Phcrson's Gallant Electric was superior to J. Gold's Black Duke. This was a very long course. Black Duke fell when the hare escaped. Mrs F. Robertson's Omar led R. Dickson's Murie's Pride, and, doing all of the work, finished up with a kill. Mrs F. Robertson's Heroine defeated P. Low's Belmont. The latter was unsighted for a time, but Heroine was far superior. Second Round.

Peter Pan led Gallant Electric by three lengths, and turned, when Gallant Electric drove to cover.

Omar led Black Thorn, and in a nice exchange defeated Black Thorn by 8 points to 5 points. Heroine ran a bye. Semi-final. Heroine defeated Peter Pan in a very short course. Final. Omar led Heroine and, doing some very nice work, easily defeated his stable mate by 7 points to 1A points, thus winning the stake for Mrs Robertson, of Balclutha. HOCKEY MATCH. Balclutha defeated High School Old Boys' B team by 4 goals to 1. The game was very fast throughout, and was marked by much interesting play, with both sides showing good form. For the winners goals were scored by Wilson, Purvis, and Every (2). Hanning scored for the losers.
