(From Our Own Correspondent.) PALMERSTON, December 12. PALMERSTON BOROUGH COUNCIL. The monthly meeting of the Palmerston Borough Council was attended by the Mayor (Mr W. H. Hopkins) and Crs Gordon, Waigen, Morrison, Thomas, Haggle, Thomson, Earley, Riddle, and M'Gregor. The foreman of works was granted a holiday from December 26 to January 7. The foreman of works reported that work on the recreation ground had been finished; the turf had been raked off. a stone drain put in, and the grass had been sown. Water meters had been read. Several meters were not working. Water channels had been cleaned out on tfin highways. Gravel had been spread on tlie west boundary road. •The power grader had been employed forming a portion of Gilligan street, and had scarified and graded in gravel on Tiverton street. Cinders had been spread on the footpath on Clifton road, and ashes levelled on the show ground. A new stop-valve had been put in at a residence in Copensha street, and a water service put in on Stronsa street. A wooden kerb had been put on the footpath on Sunday street, and the footpath formed up with gravel. Grass had been cut round the reservoirs and in front of the Town Hall.—Received. Mr J. Ryan’s tender for dog collars and plates was accepted. The dog tax was fixed at the same amount as last year. The foreman 6f works handed in a report of those residents who had ball-taps on water pipes leading to troughs. ' A number of them had no ball-taps, and they are to be given one month in which to procure them, the fee for trough licenses being 10s per annum. Permission was given for water to be laid on to section 16, block 23, where a bouse is being built. An application for an entrance to the section was also granted. The St. Mary’s Anglican Church’s account for the hall was reduced by ss, this amount being charged for lighting while preparing the hall for entertainments. The 5s charge will take effect from January 1 next.

The secretary of the Otago Hospital Board reported that their water meter had been tested, and was shown to be reading 10 gallons in excess of 420 gallons put through. The board also applied for a reduction in the charges for water supplied.—lt was decided to make a reduction of 20 per cent, on the overdue account and to charge Is 3d per 1000 gallons in future, provided the Hospital Board guaranteed to take water at that rate for five years. The local A. and P. Society was granted permission to close the road between the Show Ground and the courthouse for the forthcoming show. Several circulars were received from the Highways Board, including an estimate for tar-sealing the highways running through the.borough, which was filed for reference.

Accounts amounting to £227 4s 9d were passed for payment. Mr F, Lowen was appointed usher at the pictures, _ Application is to be made for permission for the clerk to print and publish the borough balance sheet on the duplicator.

The School Committee invited the Mayor and councillors to the school break-up. Two applications for pipes for drains were left to the Works Committee, with power to act. The Picture Committee’s action in changing the picture night from Saturday, December 24, to Friday, December 23, was approved. The borough offices will be closed from December 26 to January 7, both days inclusive.

The ranger’s attention is to he called to wandering stock about the town.
