PRISONER’S GOOD ACT

REWARD BY A JUDGE LENIENT SENTENCE PASSED. Courage shown by Charles Findlay, aged 25, mechanic, in going to the assistance of a prison official was taken into account by the Recorder, Sir Ernest Wild, in passing sentence at the Old Bailey, London. Findlay was found guilty of possessing a revolver, loaded with one round of ammunition, in such circumstances as to give rise to a reasonable suspicion that he did not have it for a lawful object. According to the prosecution, a quarrel occurred between Findlay and his wife. Mrs Findlay and her sister locked themselves in the sitting room, and as they would not open the door Findlay fired a revolver and blew the lock-off. Dr Grierson, medical officer of Brixton Prison, told how one day a patient in the hospital ward at the prison had a mental outburst, and Findlay and another man went to the assistance' of the officer of the ward, and held the man down until further aid arrived. In his effort Findlay received a “ black eye” and a slight sprain of the elbow. Taking into account that Findlay had been waiting his trial for two months, and his courage in going to the assistance of the prison official, the Recorder sentenced him to four months’ imprisonment.
