DARING ROBBERY

JEWELS WORTH £IOOO STOLEN DRAMATIC ARREST EFFECTED (Per United Press Association.) CHRISTCHURCH, October 11. A thief or thieves broke into the jewellery shop of Messrs G. Coatee and Co. (Christchurch) during the week-end and stole jewellery of a total value of £IOOO. Entry into the shop was made from the rear, and the robbery was carried out with the greatest skill and daring. The man suspected of the robbery was arrested in dramatic circumstances last night. As a result of investigations, a number of police waited near a certain house in Kilmore street. When the suspected man appeared, a revolver shot was fired as a signal by the leader of the police. A squad of police then closed on the man and chased him, 'it is alleged, through a yard, where he ran into the arms of detectives waiting at the other entrance. Another man who was present was also arrested. As a sequel to the arrest, Gordon Webb Hazeldine, aged 23, a contractor, of Sydenham, was charged this morning with breaking and entering the premises of G. Coates and Co., Ltd., and committing theft. He was remanded till October 20. FURTHER ROBBERIES. FOUR PREMISES RAIDED. (Per United Press Association.) CHRISTCHURCH, October 11. A further outbreak of thefts from shops in the city and suburbs occurred last evening, four premises being entered.
