GERMAN AIRMAN FORCED DOWN .landing in the. sea. SINGAPORE, October 10. The German airman Von Gronau was forced to descend in the sea off Tavoy (Burma) owing to engine trouble. Uwins, a British airman, in a Vicker’s Vespa biplane fitted with a Bristol Pegasus engine. Uwins reached about eight and a-half miles, beating the United States record by 800 feet.. The Marquis of Londonderry, on behalf of the Air Council, in a congratulatory message to Uwins, says that the success of the attempt was a tribute to Uwin’s own skill and to the efficiency of British aircraft and engines.
