(From Our Own Correspondent.) ALEXANDRA. January 14.. THE WEATHER. On Thursday a splendid soft rain fell all day, and the countryside has had a good drenching. With a few days’ heat now, the growth will be very projiounced. The rain this season has been phenomenal, and nothing like the irrigating that has been done in former years has been resorted to. BOWLING. The following is the draw for the second round of the Otago Central bowling fixtures:— January 23.—Clyde to Alexandra, Cromwell to Bannockburn, Roxburgh a bye. January 30. —Roxburgh to Cromwell, Bannockburn to Clyde, Alexandra a bye. February C.—Clyde to Roxburgh, Alexandra to Bannockburn, Cromwell a bye. February 13. —Roxburgh to Alexandra, Cromwell to Clyde, Bannockburn a bye. February 20.—Alexandra to Cromwell, Bannockburn to Roxburgh, Clyde a bye. March 5. —Champion singles at Alexandra at 9 a.m. March 19.—Centre pairs section play at Cromwell, Alexandra, and Roxburgh at 9 a.m. March 22.—Finals at Clyde at 1 p.m. CRICKET. On Saturday an interesting cricket match was played between the Excelsior Club and Old Timers. The match was watched by a number of spectators. Excelsior scored 117 runs in their first innings, 81 of which were made by the club’s coach, J. C. Cowie. Old Timers made 92 in their first innings and 49 in the second. VALEDICTORY.

Prior to his departure from Alexandra Mr Charles White was tendered a smoke concert by the local Returned Soldiers’ Club and presented with an illuminated address in recognition of his work in forming and fostering the chib here. A number of his friends presented him with a set of military hair brushes and a writing set. Mr White has been stationmaster at Alexandra for the past four years. Mr C. B. Robertson, president of the Returned Soldiers’ Club presented the address, and Mr Robert M. M’Carthy made the other presentation.

Before leaving Alexandra, where she had resided for many years, Miss Margaret Carroll was met at the residence of Father O’Connell and presented with a solid leather suitcase by the members of St; John’s Catholic Church. Father O’Connell, in making the presentation, stressed the excellent qualities of the guest, and referred to the assistance she had always rendered in the interests of the church. Miss Carroll left Alexandra on Monday to take up her residence in Mosgiel. METEROLOGICAL. , The following are the observations taken at the local station for the past week:— ■

Mr Wellestead the newly-appointed' stationmaster, accompanied by his wife and family, arrived in Alexandra today from Christchurch. Mrs James Russell, of Lawrence, who has been spending a holiday, in Alexandra, returned home yesterday, Mr Kennedy Black, of Invercargill, is at present spending a holiday with his brother, Mr \V. Black. Miss R. A. Scott, of the Public Works staff returned from her annual leave oh Tuesday. Mr and Mrs T. E. Sunderland, who have been spending the vacation at Warrington, returned home last evening.
