ROXBURGH NOTES

(From Our Own Correspondent.) ROXBURGH, January 14. The weather since the beginning of the year has been unsettled, and while there have been some fine days, there has been an over-abundance of rain, 180 points having fallen to date. As the result ot this the district is looking remarkably well and feed is plentiful. The ramfa 1 for the year was 24.83 inches, which, with the exception of 1926, when it was 25.48 inches, is the highest since 1920. TEVIOT POWER BOARD. The monthly meeting of the Teviot Power Board was held on January 13. Mr Michelle presiding. The following members were present: Messrs George. Waigth. Kinaston, Riach, M'Donald, and Dr Gilmoitr. The revenue for the month amounted to £7OO 11s 3d,. Correspondence was received from several consumers in the Dumbarton and Ettrick districts thanking the board lor the concessions offered for next year, and intimating their acceptance of came. FROST RELIEF COMMITTEE.

The Fruitgrowers' Frost Relief Committee held its second meeting at Ettrick on January 11, Mr C. P. Haiusworth presiding The following members were present:—Messrs Bennetts, Vernon, Stronnch, and Waigth (secretary). A considerable quantity of outward and inward correspondence was dealt with. Messrs Hainsworth and Stronach. the sub-committee appointed to make inquiries regarding employment in Nelson and Hawke's Bay foi orchard hands thrown out of employment by the frost, reported on the result of their endeavours, and were instructed to continue their efforts to place men The Railways Department has been approached to grant free passes to these employees, and in answer to an inquiry as to how many would be travelling the secretary was instructed to advise that passes for 12 would be required.

Mr Bennetts reported upon the work he was arranging in his riding tor the benefit of orchardists who were in need of employment, and the committee expressed its appreciation of his efforts. Twenty-live applications for financial assistance were received. A deputation, consisting of Messrs Hainsworth, Stronach, and Vernon, will wait on the Tiiapeka County Council on Friday and furnish full information concerning the various applications. OBITUARY.

The death occurred in Dunedin on January 3 of Mr Joseph Weatherall, a well-known and high-respected resident of Coal Creek. Mr _ Weatherall some months ago had the misfortune to suffer a broken arm while working in his orchard. Though lie received the best of attention, the injury gave him considerable trouble and. unfortunately, he was stricken with a serious illness which, despite all medical aid and care, caused his death. Mr Weatherall had resided in the district sincj his youth, and, though engaged in various occupations, his principal inteiest was fruit growing. In conjunction with bis two sons, he had two orchards at Coal Creek, which he worked successfully. In public affairs he took a keen interest in all matters pertaining to the welfare of the district. As a member of the Methodist Church, he was always to the forefront of every activity connected with it. and for many years occupied the position of local preacher. It was perhaps in his church activities that his friends found him at his best, for he was never lacking where the interests of his church were concerned. This and his sterling worth commanded for him the highest regard and esteem of the whole district, and much regret was expressed when the news of his death became known. The interment took place on January 6, the Rev. Mr Petersen officiating at the graveside. Mr Weatherall is survived by his widow and" a family of nine—five sous and four daughters. .
