CLYDE NOTES

(From Our Own Correspondent.) CLYDE, January 14. THE WEATHER'. The conditions over the holidays were very unsettled with heavy winds and some sharp showers of rain. Only periodic days of warm sunshine have been experienced, contrary to the usual Central Ota?; 0 weather at this time of the year. To® effect upon the fruit has been to delay varieties in ripening, but everything is of good quality and promising. Later fruits may be affected adversely, however, as continuous heat is essential for quick maturity; Generally speaking, pastures and crops look well and the wool clip is equal to the best. UNEMPLOYMENT COMMITTEE. A lengthy meeting of the Unemployment Committee was held last week, when Cr S. A. Stevens presided lover a full attendance. , , ' The certifying officer and secretary intimated having had a visit of inspection from a representative of the Unemployment Board, who had given valuable information about the board’s system and expressed considerable satisfaction at the methods adopted by this committee; As a result of the- inspection of papers they had made additional inquiries in regard to certain employees which had resulted in confirming their eligibility. The county engineer stated that the Vincent County Council had decided to hold over some applications under the extended regulations of No. 5 scheme, whereby councils could undertake property improvements until more details were available. It was decided that adjacent committees be approached for suitable men for a 4a application. A letter was received from the secretary of the Alexandra Returned Soldiers’ Association relative to two men who had had continuous employment beyond the period specified by the board, owing to a misunderstanding of the conditions. —It was decided that 'the men should stand down for a fortnight as regulations required. Considerable correspondence from the board was considered. _ In reply to inquiries from this committee the board intimated that two applications for men under 4a should bo accepted provided an undertaking was given that the men were additional to the ordinary labour employed and were definitely on work of a developmental nature. The board also replied to representations made again concerning reduced allocations, pointing out that the best was done for each centre according to the board’s financial situation.

The other communications were cimilars dealing with 4a and 5 schemes. One interesting letter dealt with the new provision that all workers must provide some necessities of life by the assiduous cultivation of garden .plots, and suggested that schemes on the lines of the Stratford Community Club might be advantageous. The board asked committee to secure plots for cultivation where workers had no area of their own These details were noted by the committee, though they hardly applied locally, ns most of the men are interested gardeners. The certifying officer submitted applications for registration and others papers resulting as follow:—Four were passed as eligible, four were struck off through securing private employment, one was transferrred. Five applications for men under 4a were dealt with as circumstances demanded. The committee decided to draw attention to the fact that papers were not being properly filled in, with unavoidable delay, and thus put much extra work upon officers. It was further decided that a worker reported for being under the influence of liquor should sign

an order upon his wages in favour of his wife. The allocation for the next period, showing a slight increase upon the former, was left in the hands of Messrs Rowley and George for appointment, CLYDE BRIDGE RECONSTRUCTION The contractor (Mr Thomas Wilkinson) has begun work on the reconstruction of the bridge, men being employed in placing sheds for material and equipment. it will be some time yet before the bridge is actually begun and is being made for a crossing for traffic at certain hours of the morning and evening. \ considerable amount of material is coming direct from England, and until actually in hand and listed the work will necessarily proceed at a slow pace. The contractor has been overwhelmed with applications for employment and is to be commended for the fact that be intends giving preference to local men in need of employment. FRASER RIVER RESERVE.

This area is growing yearly in popularity as a camping resort and is very suitable and attractive for such a purpose. The Vincent County CounciJ recently accepted a tender for the building of conveniences and these are well on the way to completion. As a small sum of money will be left over it has been decided to erect three swings for children. PERSONAL.
