WORKING RAILWAYS

LATEST FOUR-WEEKLY RETURN (Per United Press Association.) WELLINGTON, January 14. The Railway Working Account for the four-weekly period ended December 5, 1931, is as. follows: —

The foregoing figures show a net revenue for the period of £52,211., BALANCING THE ACCOUNTS EFFORTS OF RAILWAYS BOARD. (Pee United Press Association.) WELLINGTON, January 14. The gross railway revenue in New Zealand for the period of 35J weeks from April 1 to December 5, 1931, was £4,205,134, or £858,320 below the figure for the corresponding period in 1930, The aggregate expenditure for the period was, however, £3,958,541, or £896,453 below the 1930 figure. The period of 35i weeks under survey has been characterised by diminishing returns, closely pursued and practically offset by substantial cuts in the expenditure. The actual net revenue for the period was £246,593, compared with £248,400 for , the corresponding 35£ weeks of 1930. An analysis of the returns for the fourweekly period up to December 5 last indicates that towards the end of the year the economies have more than balanced the fall in revenue. The extent to which the new Railways Board policy has assisted the position will not be assessable until a comparison over a longer period is available. Some economies were already in effect when the Railways Board assumed control several months ago. For the four weeks ended December 5 last the gross revenue was £476,471, or £74,924 below the returns for the corresponding weeks in 1930. The expendxture, however, was £84,890 less than that during the period in 1930. The ultimate result was that for these four weeks toward the end of 1931 the net revenue was £52,211, or nearly £IO,OOO better than the net revenue of £42,245 for the corresponding weeks in the previous year.
