MONTHLY MEETING OF COUNCIL The monthly meeting of the Peninsula County Council was held at Portobello yesterday; present: Crs Macandrew (chairman), Miller, Stewart, Cross, Irvine, Allan, Hellyer, Brunton and Kobertson. CORRESPONDENCE. The chief surveyor (Mr N. C. Kensington) advised that the formation and metalling of Luke street and Short street would be attended to by his department before sections having a frontage to these streets were offered to the public.—Received. The Commissioner'of Transport advised that the following classification of roads in the Peninsula County had been recommended by the department:—Second class: Dunedin-Portobello Beach road. Third class: Dunedin-Portobello high road; Dun-cdin-Highclilf, via Tomahawk, road; Portobello-Harrington Point road. Fourth class; Portobello-Cape Saunders road; lliddells-Hooper’s Inlet road. —It was decided to adopt the recommendations. Elizabeth M. Carrington (Macandrew Bay) wrote drawing attention to the dangerous state of several large branches on the bluegum trees in front of her property and requested the council to take steps to remove the trees, which were a constant source of annoyance and danger Left in the hands of the member for the riding, E. Robertson (Pukehiki) wrote applying for permission to shift his milk staging a few yards to the side of his byre road. —Application granted. Mrs E. Addison (Wavcrley) again wrote asking if the council could do something towards improving the road leading to her property before the winter.—Left in the hands of the member for the riding and the engineer. Alexander Braid (Pukehiki) wrote stating that he intended erecting a new fence along his boundary on Seal Point road. The old fence was not apparently in the

correct position and he desired the engineer to inspect the position of the old fence before the new one was proceeded witliv —Engineer to inspect the fence. • A. Begg (Broad Bay) wrote asking if the council could see its way to clean up the portion of John street in front of his sections. This section of the road was overgrown with convolvulus and stocks.— Left to the member for the riding. The secretary of the Peninsula Ratepayers’ Association wrote drawing attention to the fact that motorists wore frequently using the Beaconsficld road to Mr Kinnaird’s property, taking their cars there on the way to the Portobello hatchery. His committee considered that this road was not safe for motor traffic, and for the protection of the council and the ratepayers it was suggested that a notice to that effect should be erected at the beginning of the road. Attention was also drawn to the bad state of the road on the west side of Hooper’s Inlet.—lt was decided that a notice prohibiting motor traffic on the first road bo erected. The engineer was instructed to inspect the road at Hooper’s Inlet. RANGER’S REPORT. The county ranger reported that he had found 23 head of cattle wandering on the county roads during the past month.—The report was adopted. ENGINEER’S REPORT. The county engineer (Mr S. G. Paterson) submitted the following report on the work done during the month: — Portobello Riding.—Repairs to the sea wall on the Portobello to Harrington Point road had been continued. This road had been graded up once during the period. Sandyraount Riding.—Approximately 20 chains of the main highway had been resurfaced. Thirteen cubic yards of screenings had been spread on the Sandymouut road. Ilighcliff Riding.—Sixty cubic yards of maintenance metal had been spread on the main highway. The High road had been graded up once. Tomahawk Riding,—A small bridge on Smaill’s road had been raised and placed on new hardwood bearei’s, and the ap-

pi-oachcs built up. The approaches to the bridge on the main highway had been built up and metalled, North-East Harbour Riding.—The repairs to the sea wall at Vauxhall had been completed. The widening of Larnach road, Vauxhall, had been completed. Maintenance metal had been spread at the approach to the Anderson’s Bay bridge and at the bitumen. Broad Bay Riding.—The fencing of Wilson’s road was complete. A quantity of rouglx metal had been placed on the widening of the side streets in Broad Bay, and was being broken. One 24in culvert on Coney terrace bad been lengthened, and the filling bad been left to settleg Maintenance metal had been spread on the Portobello to Broad Bay section of the main highway. Five tenders were received for contract No. 26 —metalling Dick’s road from Gill’s corner to Gravesend —that of Messrs Sprott and Timblick, at £l7l, bei'a accepted.
