OBITUARY

THE EARL OF KIMBERLEY , LONDON, January 8. The death is announced of the Earl of Kimberley, whose heir is Lord Wodehouse, the famous polo player. He was S 3 years of age. SIR WILLIAM MILLS MUNITIONS MANUFACTURERS. LONDON, January 8. (Received Jan. 8, at 10 p.m.) The death is announced of Sir William Mills, proprietor of Mills Munitions, Ltd., Birmingham. It was stated recently that instead’ of making a fortune from bombs he lost £30,000 over their manufacture. In February, 1915, Sir William Mills invented the Mills Hand Grenade, used exclusively and successfully by the British and the other Allies throughout the war, and of which 75,000,000 were supplied. MR J. R. MURRAY The death occurred at Seville, Victoria, on Christmas Day, of Mr J. R. Murray, who,was well-known in Dunedin 40 years or so ago as a Rugby football player. He was captain of the Dunedin Football Club for two or three, years, and for eight successive years from ISTS was a member of the Otago representative team. He played wing three-quarter back and, a strong and swerving runner, was a very difficult man to stop. He w'as in the employ of Messrs Sargood. Son and Ewen for some time in Dunedin and subsequently in that of the Phosnix Company, On his removal to Melbourne in the eighties he re-entered the service of Messrs Sargood, Son and Ewen, in which he remained for many years, but subsequently established himself in business in Seville. He was a son of Mr R. K. Murray, a confectioner in this city in the early days, and was married in Victoria to a Miss Berry, a sister of Lady Syme, whose death occurred last year.

MISS A. V. ANDERSON The death has occurred of Miss Albertina Vinetta Anderson, a member of the staff of the Birkenhead School, Auckland. Miss Anderson, who was the eldest daughter of Mr and Mrs Frederick Anderson, of Invercargill, was born in Southland and was educated in Invercargill and at the Dunedin Training College. At the age of 16 she entered the teaching profession and taught in many Southland schools as an assistant teacher, sole teacher and head teacher. In 1929 Miss Anderson was appointed infant mistress in the Birkenhead School, which position ghe held at the time of her death.
