(From Our Own Correspondent.! v BALCLUTHA, December 23. POLICEMAN ASSAULTED. At the Balcllitha Police Court to-day, before Mr AV. Roy, J.P., Sydney George Smith, taxi driver, was charged with assaulting Constable Feely while in the execution of his duty. From the evidence it appeared that the constable had arreste.d the defendant on a charge of being drunk' while in charge of a car, and was taking him on foot to the police station, when defendant suddenly assaulted him. The defendant escaped, but was arrested on warrant this morning. On the application of Sergeant Armstrong the defendant was remanded till Wednesday, when in addition to the charge of assault other charges will be preferred against him. PAIRS’ TOURNAMENT. Fourteen pairs participated jn a bowling tournament on the Balclutha Green on Saturday, the winner turning up in Mr Eastwood (Dunedin), while the leads prize wag won by Mrs M'Namara. Four ladies took part in the tournament. ’ CHRISTMAS. Christmas Day passed off very quietly in Balclutha, a number of the residents taking their departure for Kaka Point. On Christmas Eve the Balclutha shops were very busy, and the town wore quite a holiday appearance. The Balclutha Brass Band made a welcome appearance, and later in the night participated in the old practice of carol playing, while a band of Methodist choir singers * sang enrols until a late hour on Friday morning. PROPERTY CHANGES. Several changes in the ownership of farm properties in this district have taken place recently. Among the latest I of these is the sale by Mr R. Tyree of i a property on the Main South road, near Balclutha, to Mr H. Sand ford, formerly of Stony Creek. Mr Sandford takes possession on January 8. It is probable that Air Tyree will purchase a smaller farm in this district. BRIDGE ALLOCATION. It is estimated that under the new allocation, as decided by Commissioner Read, Balclutha Borough will have to pay £3083 6s 8d as its share of the cost of the proposed new bridge, Bruce County £2750, and Clutha County case of the borough this is £305 11s Id more than under the first allocation of one-third each, as proposed by the Main Highways Board. In addition there is the cost of the commission, but whether tlie local bodies concerned are to be saddled with that is not yet clear.
