Mr D, V. G. Smith has'' returned to Oainaru after attending the'New Zealand Racing Conference in Wellington. A motion of sympathy wao passed at the quarterly meeting of the _ Oamaru Methodist- Church with. Mrs W. Jones, ■ in the death of her husbandv Mr Charles James, of the Oamaru Magistrate’s Court, has received notice of his transfer to Christchurch, where he (•Will assume his new-duties as court crier of . the Supreme-Court on' August 1. Mr -Habershon, of the Health Department, Wellington, will succeed Mr James at Oamaru. Mr James .has filled the position of bailiff, maintenance officer, and deputy registrar of births, deaths, and ■ marriages at the r Oamai‘u'. Magistrate’s vCourt for; the past 11 years, and his reimoval to Christchurch will be regretted .byvhis numerous friends’,' who, however, congratulate him on his advancement. Mr James has been a prominent musician in the town, and has done much for the ad vancemept of the art- in Oamaru. He has been a member of the Regimental Band,-, a foundation member of the Coun oil of Braves of the Oamaru Savage Club a member of the Philharmonic Society and other musical organisations. He is an accomplished pianist, and asm singer gave his services freely and willingly for the benefit of local organisations. Constable J. R.
