PORT CHALMERS NEWS

WATERFRONT ACTIVITIES A large number of Port Chalmers waterside workers, after a week’s idleness, due to the lack of shipping, commenced work yesterday loading frozen meat, wool, tallow, and general cargo on the motor liner Opawa. The trawler Black Cat is having a new tail shaft ■ fitted in place of the shaft which was broken a few days ago. The trawler Silver Crest is having a new mast stepped. Owing to the fore slay carrying away, the old mast broke when a heavy trawl was being handled. The Waikouaiti is expected at Port Chalmers about Saturday to load one of the Maheno’s turbines. The turbine will be conveyed to Sydney, where it will be partly renewed at the Cockatoo works. PORT CHALMERS BAND The Port Chalmers Band gave a concert on Sunday evening in the Town Hall. There was a good attendance, and the numerous items met with hearty approval. A cornet solo by Mr J. Olsen was an outstanding performance. In addition to the selections given by the band, a number of songs were contributed, the singers being Miss M. Howden, Mrs E. Johnson, Mr R. Davies, Mr D. Forsyth, and Mr L. Nelson. The band, which showed remarkable improvement, was conducted by Mr J; Kellett. CARGO STEAMER KAMONA The cargo steamer Kainona, which has been purchased by an Eastern firm, is still at Port Chalmers awaiting orders from her new owner, who is at present in Auckland supervising the refitting of the steamer Kaituna. The Kamona will probably load in New Zealand for Hongkong. The stoppage of coal supplies at Westport, wliere the Kamona was to bunker, has delayed her departure from Port Chalmers.
