ST. KILDA COUNCIL
FORTNIGHTLY MEETING The fortnightly meeting of the _ St. Hilda Borough Council was held last night in the Borough Council Chambers, and was attended by the Mayor (Mr J. Beattie), and Crs Leary, Conn, Carman, Baird, Longworth, Edgar, and Telfer. FINANCE. Accounts amounting to £576 2s 6d were passed for payment. WATER CONSUMPTION. It was reported that the water consumption for the past fortnight was 4,627,000 gallons, costing £IOO 13s 6d. REPORT OF FOREMAN. The foreman of works (Mr J. Clyma) reported on the work done in the borough during the fortnight, and submitted suggestions for work to be done. There had been about 150 unemployed men engaged for digging parks and lawns and planting grass on streets and footpaths. The report was adopted. CORRESPONDENCE. A letter was received from the district engineer, Public Works Department, stating that the Minister had approved of the council having an extended loan for six weeks of tools for unemployment works at a cost of 10s per week. The town clerk, Dunedin, wrote regarding the proposed levelling and grass planting on the .tramway lend in Royal crescent, between the Anderson's Bay road and Victoria road. The letter stated that the work would be put in hand at the earliest possible date. The Mayor reported on a meeting of residents Which had been held to discuss this matter, and he stated that they had agreed to look after the grass. He had assured them that the council would cut it. It had been suggested that the local unemployed men should be given the work, but it now appeared that it was to be done by the Tramways Department. —The letter was received. The Milton District Unemployment Committee forwarded a copy of a circular letter protesting against the Otago Expansion League’s action in urging the Government to push on the work of constructing a highway to the West Coast by way of the Haast Pass. It was considered by the committee, the letter stated, that all available funds should be devoted, to improving the existing roads in the settled districts as, in many cases, farmers were now compelled to use roads whicn were little better than when originally formed.—The letter was received Cr Longworth said that now that grass was to be planted in Royal crescent, he was of the opinion that the time was ripe for tree-planting in Culling Park. He suggested that the Mayor and the chairman of the Works Committee should confer with the superintendent of reserves (Mr D. Tannock) regarding the most suitable trees and the approximate cost.— Other councillors supported the suggestion, Cr Baird remarking that it would be necessary to guard against damage being done to the trees while they were young. Instances of trees being broken down were given.—The Mayor agreed that that aspect would require to be considered before any action was taken. —Cr Longworth said that he suggested planting trees a few years old. Such damage as had been done in the past was attributable to a few “young hooligans, and he did not consider that the danger was great.—lt was decided to act upon Cr Longworth s suggestion. LIGHTING OF STREETS.
There was a discussion on the question of lighting in Jackson and Massey streets, and it was decided to set up a sub-corn-raittee, consisting of the Mayor and Crs Telfer, Edgar, and Conn, to go into the matter and report to next meeting.
