MAORI HILL PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH
LECTURE AND PLAY-READING
A large audience assembled in the Sim Street Hall, Maori Hill,, on Saturday evening when Miss Blackie, of the Physics Department of Otago University, lectured upon “ The Splendour of the Heavens.” Miss Blackie, whose lecture was illustrated by lantern slides and various diagrams, gave a very lucid and interesting account of our solar system, and of the wonders of the heavenly bodies beyond it in the immensities of space, touching upon many of the more recent astronomical theories. Miss Blackie’s lecture was followed by the reading of the one-act play, “Five Birds in a Cage,” the characters being taken by Mrs J. G. Young—Susan, Duchess of Wiltshire; Mr Charles Wilson —Leonard, Lord Forth; Miss Winnie Rule—an assistant milliner; Mr R. L. Fairmaid—Bert, a bricklayer; Mr G. Wilson—Horace, the liftman; Mr J. R. Steven—chorus. The play was exceedingly well read, the audience being delighted with the manner in which the humour of the situation was brought out. A string orchestra, under the leadership of Miss Ngaio Garland, rendered a programme of music during the evening, and did much to secure its general success. Before supper was served by Mesdames Mayden and Dalgleish, Dr Mullen expressed the keen appreciation of all present of the high standard of the programme, and thanked Miss BlaCkie, the playreaders, the orchestra, those who had arranged the supper, and Mr Edward Aslin, who had operated the lantern.
