diers of Central Otago was held in Alexandra last evening. The function was very successful in every way. The chairman (Lieutenant C. B. Robertson) presided over a large attendance. After the loyal toast had been honoured the toast of “ The Returned Soldiers’ Association ” was proposed by Dr D. N. Scrymgeour (Lauder), who reminded those present of the great work which the association had accomplished. On his return from the front he had joined the association with the idea of being able to do his little bit to' help his comrades. It was with regret that he learned that numbers were dropping out of the association. At the present time there was more need than ever before for a strong organisation, as many soldiers were only now feeling the effects of the disablements received on the various battlefields. The toast was responded to by Mr Gordon, vice-president of the Returned Soldiers’ Association, Dunedin, who apologised for the absence of the president and members of the Dunedin executive. ‘He said the work done by the association in the past had been wonderful. Its work put the New Zealand Association in a position second to nbne in the world. He quoted figures showing the numerical strengths of the various provincial associations in_ New Zealand which showed Otago to be in the lead this year. There was an awakening of interest in the association similar to that of the South African veterans some years ago. The work of the Returned Soldiers’ Association in Dunedin was principally concerned with pensions, but a great deal of work was being caused through unemployment. He urged the non-members of the association to join up and so give their backing to the council in Wellington. He also would like to see a sub-association formed in Alexandra. Air J. D. Watt proposed the toast of “ Parliament,” and Air W. A. Bodkin, ALP. for Central Otago, replied. Air A. E. Ellis proposed the toast of “The Mayor” (Air Bringans), who suitably replied. Air A. E. Gladstone, in humorous vein, propovsed the toast of “ The Allies,” which was responded to by Air C. AI. Burgess. Air L. H. Denniston proposed the toast of “ The Veterans,” which was responded to by Air A. Taylor (New Zealand Forces in tho South African war) and Air E. G. Allnatt (British Horces in the South African war). Air W. A. Bodkin, M.P. proposed the toast of “ The Army, Navy, and Air Horces,” and Colonel Holland replied. Other toasts proposed were “ The Ladies,” “The Alusicians,” “The Press,” and the chairman and secretary and mess orderlies. The speeches were interspersed with musical items contributed by Messrs S. Wragge, .Frank Perkins, J. Duncan, R, AlTntosh. and Brent, and stories were told by Dr Scrymgeour, Colonel Holland, and Air C. AI. Burgess'. TEACHERS’ CONFERENCE. Over 50 teachers from all parts of Central Otago assembled in Alexandra on Alonday to receive instruction in physical training. The instructors were Air A. P. Roydhouse and Alisa Dickson, instructors in physical training in the Education Department in Otago. Air Roydhouse addressed the teachers on the points that were being emphasised under the newer form of physical training. Mr W. R. Alechaclis (rector of the Alexandra High School), at tho conclusion of the class, thanked the instructors for the pleasure that had been derived by those present at the course. Air Roydhouse suitably replied. PERSONAL. Air Hugh Alunro has returned to Alexandra. Air W. Flannery is at present spending a . holiday in Alexandra. Air J.
