NEW ZEALAND THOROUGHBREDS FOR CHILE.

The collection of six thoroughbred yearling fillies purchased at the national sales at Trentham last month, which are to form the pioneer shipment of thoroughbreds to Chile from New Zealand are being shipped by Messrs Wright, Stephenson, and Co., Ltd., on the Northumberland from Wellington. The yearlings, which will travel in specially constructed loose boxes, will be taken off at Panama and transhipped from there to Valparaiso, the principal port of Chile. The yearlings, which were purchased by Senor Meyer Braun, who attended the sales in person, are, with the exception, of one selected on behalf of a friend, intended as additions to Senor Braun’s stud, but it ia his intention to race them as two-year-olds next season.. The yearlings comprise a brown filly by last year’s leading sire, Chief Ruler, from a young English mare named Prophet’s Mark. The latter is by Attains, a high-class Irish stayer, and she is from the Agnes family, one of the pillars of the English Stud Book. This filly and two others secured by Senor Braun were bred by Mr John Donald in his Westmere stud. Senor Braun was undoubtedly fortunate in securing the brown filly by Grand Knight from Baylock, which was one of the most attractive fillies in the catalogue. Baylock is,by Bay Drop, an own brother to Gainsborough, sire of Solario. Baylock is from the same family as All Black, which gave to the New Zealand turf such/great horses as Desert Gold and Nigger Minstrel. This filly is one of the first of Grand Knight’s stock, which made a very strong impression at the sales on account of their splendid conformation and quality. The third of the Westmere yearlings in the shipment is by Mr G. M. Currie’s young sire, Pombal. Pombal, who ia a half-brother to the noted sire of classic winners, Limond. has sired some very promising two-year-olds in his first season, including the double winner. Esteem. The Pombal filly is a chestnut from Pebble 11, an English mare by Rock Flint and from the famous Paraffin family. This is a very beautiful filly, showing all the quality that this famous line is noted for, and, as Pombal brings in the Sunshine family, Senor Braun has secured a filly that is bred on splendid lines for the paddock, for there is nothing better to breed from than the Paraffin and Sunshine families. Limond, Night Raid, Rossendale,- Manfred, Heroic, Magpie, etc., are representatives of these two lines at present in this part of the world. A filly of Mr G. M. Currie’s breeding in the consignment is the bay yearling by Thespian from Rose Queen. This filly is a half-sister to Ruanui, who won the Feilding Cup in November. The Thorn, by Absurd, and Roseneath, by the same sire, both good winners in Australia, are also from Rose Queen, and another recent winner from this family is Volimond. The Rose Queen filly is from the same family as Carbine, who was the first horse bred in New Zealand to bring international fame to this country. There are also two fillies bred in the Okawa stud of Mr T. H. Lowry, the breeder also of the famous Desert Gold. The first' of the fillies secured was out of an own sister to Mr Lowry’s great mare in D’Oro. , D’Oro has already produced four good winners, and her daughters in turn are also proving a success at the stud, one having produced Gold Find, a high-class two-year-old, last season in Queensland, and Grand Jury, by Grandcourt, which is shaping like a good stayer in New r

Zealand this season. Senor Braun’s filly is also by Grandcourt, which is the sire of Second Wind, a horse that ran second in the latest Melbourne Cup, and followed this up by carrying the top-weight first past the post in the Williamstown Cup. The other representative of the Okawa stud in the consignment is a black filly by Psychology from Miss Cute. This filly is, therefore, a full sister to Clever, which won three races as a two-year-old, and, after winning twice as a three-year-old, was sent to West Australia. Miss Cute is out of a half-sister to the Derby winner, Aboyeur, who was exported to the Argentine. Senor Braun’s consignment of horses will, no doubt, create very keen interest in his own country, where racing is carried on with great regularity for the greater part of the year. The principal race there is the “ Ensayo,” for three-year-olds bred in the country. This race is contested at Santiago, the capital city, during October, It carries a prize of 80,000 pesos, which is equivalent, roughtly, to 2000sovs. Racing at Santiago continues from that time on every Sunday and feast day up to the end of the year. At least once a week there is a classic race carrying a prize of approximately £SOO. After December 31 the season changes from Santiago to Vina del Mar, which is close to Valparaiso. There is an excellent course at this centre, and there the Chilean Derby is run. It carries a prize equivalent to 1750sovs. Racing is carried on at Vina del Mar up to the end of March without a break. Some time ago a breeders’ association was formed in the country with the idea of giving an impetus to thoroughbred breeding and also with the object of securing better prize money. It is understood that the association is meeting with considerable success, and as a result of the increased interest taken in the breeding of the thoroughbred it is more than likely that New Zealand will be patronised by Chilean breeders in the future, as horses bred here are foaled at the same time as they are in Chile, and_ would, therefore, be eligible to compete in their classics, with the exception of those_ races which are restricted to horses bred in the country.
