Mrs Gardiner 19 beat Mrs Stubbs 18

Mrs Stubbs monopolised the scoring on the first four heads, at the end of which she had a lead of 12. Then, Mrs Gardiner replied with a five, but at the tenth head Mrs Stubbs was still seven up. From this stage Mrs Gardiner began steadily to improve. When the bell went a short head had just been started, the scores beng 18 —16 in Mrs Stubb’s favour. Mrs Gardiner, however, succeeded in securing a three, which left here the winner by one point after a. hard tight. Mrs Jewell 16 beat Mrs Higginson 15. Mrs Sewell secured a one and a two on the first two heads, and after a two to Mrs Higginson, she added four more. Mrs Higginson did all the scoring on the next four heads, at the end of which she led by 10 to 7. A single to Mrs Sewell was followed by three singles to Mrs Higginson, who led by 13 to 8. Two threes to Mrs Sewell quickly reversed the order, and she added a two to lead by three points. Mrs Higginson could gain only a two on the sixteenth head, and Mrs Sewell was left the winner by one point. Final. Mrs Gardiner 21 beat Mrs Sewell 20. In spite of the fact that a chilly wind was blowing and the players had had a long day’s bowling, the play in the final was generally of a high standard. It was watched with the, keenest interest by a fairy large number of spectators, who at all stages were provided with play that was well worthy of their attention. The scoring was opened by Mrs Sewell, who gained a single on the first head and followed it with another single and a three. A three and a single to Mrs Gardiner reduced the advantage to one, but a three gave Mrs Sewell a comfortable lead once more. On the seventh head Mrs Gardiner could score no more than a single, and her position, was far from promising when Mrs Sewell secored one, four, and three on successive heads to lead by 16 points to 5. Interest increased as Mrs Gardiner began to score steadily, and after two singles she added a two and a four, with the result that with 14 heads played the score was only 16 —13 in Mrs Sewell’s favour. Mrs Sowell then drew away with two singles, and after Mrs Gardiner had scored one more, Mrs Sewell added a two to lead by 20 points to 14 with only three heads to play. The nineteenth head went in Mrs Gardiner’s favour, but she could score only one. The run of the play on the next head, however, was all in her favour, and she added a five, the biggest score of the game, to draw level on the twentieth head, the scores being 20 all. The interest was intense as the final head began, and Best bowled well to lie three when the leads had played. With a wick off a front bowl Mrs Gardiner brought about a quick change and reduced the lead to one. Her next, an excellent effort,. gave her the shot. Mrs Sewell could not alter the position, and the game went in Mrs Gardiner’s favour by one point. It is interesting to note that Gardiner and Best, who led for the finalists, together won the Christmas pairs tournament and were both members of the Dunedin rink which won the New Zealand Championship.
