AMATEUR ATHLETICS.

CIVIL SERVICE CHAMPIONSHIPS.

The Civil Service Harrier and Amateur Athletic Club staged its final championship meeting at the Caledonian Ground last night. The track was in good order, but there was a cold wind blowing from the bay. M'Lachlan showed a glimpse of his old form m winning the Quarter-mile Championship, while Barnes annexed the Two-imie Championship. Although the standard of the field events was poor, one or two young competitors showed promise, and should greatly improve if placed in the hands of a capable coach. The following are the results; — 440 YARDS CHAMPIONSHIP. L. C. M'Lachlan • 1 J. G. Barnes 2 R. Maskell .. 3 Twelve started. Going into the back straight M'Lachlan led from Barnes by five yards, with the rest of the field strung out. Increasing his lead, to win by eight ::ards, M'Lachlan eased up at the tape. Fourteen started. Several different competitors took the lead for the first mile. With four laps to go, Barnes led from Geddes, M'Knight, and M'Kernan, in that order, the rest of the fietld having now dropped out. At the beginning of the second lap Geddes displaced Barnes, but from the bell Barnes went to the front, and won by eight yards. In a fine finish for second place. Geddes beat M'Knight by a yard.
