(From Our Own Correspondent.) MILTON. January 25. WOOD-CHOPPING ACCIDENT. Whilst engaged in the wood-chopping competition at the Waihola sports on Saturday afternoon a Milton youth, named Walter Barker, had the misfortune to sever two toes of his left foot. He was attended to by a visiting doctor, and afterwards conveyed to the Milton Hospital. , PERSONAL. Deputy-superintendent J. R. Wilson has again been appointed by the Milton Eire Brigade as its delegate to attend the United Fire Brigades’ Association's annual conference at Nelson in March. The brigade has also nominated Mr Wilson for the position of a vice-president of the association. In the election of office-bearers for the forthcoming annual conference of delegates

of the Southern Districts Fire Brigades’ Association, to be held at Alexandra next month, the Milton Fire Brigade has nominated its superintendent (Mr W. H. Wells) for the position of vice-president. CRICKET. In the third round of the South Otago Cricket Association’s shield matches, played on Saturday afternoon in the northern division, Milton A defeated the club’s B team by 74 runs (139 —65). BOWLING. The leading teams in the South Otago Association’s inter-club bowling competition—Milton and Kaitangata—met on the local green on Saturday afternoon. Milton continued its run of successes, and defeated Kaitangata for the second time this season by the substantial margin of 23 points. Milton thus heads the competition by one point from Kaitangata, with the latter a match in hand. Scores (Milton names first): —Adamson. A highly successful sports and carnival, organised by the Waihola Improvement Society, was held on the recently-formed sports ground on the foreshore of Lake Waihola. The carnival was held both in the afternoon and evening, and attracted a good attendance of spectators. A programme of sports events was got through, the principal attraction being a tug-oi-war competition (five men a-side), for which liberal prize money was offered. Eleven teams were nominated, but Taieri Mouth and Warnock’s team defaulted. The various pulls resulted as follows: — First round: Akatore defeated Waihola No. Ill; Hoffman Bros. (Gore) defeated Waihola No. II; Taylor’s team (Milburn) beat Glenledi. Second round: Taylor’s team beat Moneymore; Waihola No. I beat Akatore; Hoffman Bros, beat Otakou (a Maori team). In the semifinal Hoffman’s beat Waihola No. I team, and Taylor’s had the bye. Yorston 2. The festivities wound up with a dance in the evening, which was largely attended. FARMERS’ UNION. About 40 farmers from all parte of the Tokomairiro district attended a public meeting, held in St. John’s Hall on Saturday evening, under the auspices of the Milton branch of the New Zealand Farmers’ Union. The chair was occupied by the president (Mr P. Grant). An address was delivered by Mr F. Waite, .M.P., who dealt principally with the serious problems at present confronting the farming community, and the difficulties of solution. He stressed the need for economy in Government administration and the drastic necessity for the application of the pruning knife in departmental expenditure. Mr Waite also dealt at length with the unemployment problem and the necessity for endeavouring to place the men on works of a productive character, instead of wasting the money in the construction of railways which, he said, would only increase the annual loss on the railways, and thus increase the burden on the taxpayer. At the conclusion-of Mr Waite’s address a general discussion ensued on a number of problems vitally affecting the interests of the farming community, and a number of resolutions were adopted. Mr C. R. Sheat moved: “That, owing to the changed nature of transport on the roads, the present method of rating for maintenance of the roads is obsolete, ?ind it is urgently desired that farm lands be derated for reading purposes; further, that the revenue for upkeep of roads be derived through the petrol tax.”—The motion was seconded by Mr D, M’Gregor and carried.

Mr R. H. Michelle moved a resolution in favour of the adoption of a system of agricultural finance to provide loan money at a moderate rate of interest. —Seconded by Mr T. H Russell, and carried. ' Mr J. G. Somerville moved a resolution in support of the reduction in Customs taxation to bring down both the_ cost of living and working costs. —This was seconded by Mr J. H. Raitt, and carried. Mr D. Grant moved in support of the removal of some of the present restrictions on industry inflicted by the conditions imposed in awards by the Arbitration Court. —This was seconded by Mr JC. Alexander, and carried. Mr C. R. Sheat moved a resolution in favour of a reduction in the present cost of administration by the various Government departments.—Seconded by Mr A. J. Hawke, and carried. The final resolution was proposed bjf Mr A. Tweed, urging that Parliament be called together immediately to consider the question of the best means of lowering the costs of production.—Seconded by Mr R. H. Michelle, and carried.
