FRENCH GOVERNMENT
DEFEAT IN THE CHAMBER. RESIGNATION ANNOUNCED. (United Press Association.) (By Electric Telegraph—Copyright.) PARIS, January , 23. (Received Jan. 23, at 11.30 p.m.) The Government was defeated in the Chamber following criticisms of M. Boret’s wheat price plan. The Government has decided to resign. Describing the position of French agriculture as tragic, M. Boret (Minister of Agrculture), who was interviewed, pointed out that stock was selling below the cost of production, and the peasants were losing from 20 to 25 francs on a quintal of wheat. He announced that he was introducing energetic remedies, which he admitted might increase the cost of living, but the Government was seeking reductions in other directions. He added: “The consumer must learn that we. are entering on an era of restrictions.” The Steeg Ministry was formed on December 13 following the resignation of the Tardieu Ministry. M. Boret on January 16 announced an increase in the tariff on imported wheat, sending the price from 14s to 14s 7d a hundredweight. No ■ surprise was occasioned by the defeat of the Cabinet, as it had been realised since the Chamber assembled that the first controversial question was certain to bring about its fall.
