COMMON IDEA OF GOD. STATEMENT BY A BISHOP. , ' (United Press Association.) (By Electric Telegraph—Copyright.) LONDON, January 22. “ The common idea among men that God was a sort of great spy, a Being who was trying to ‘do them in,’ is responsible for the indifference and hostility towards religion throughout the world to-day,” said the Bishop of London at the Upper House Convocation, This is also the position in connection with the idea of Christ dying to appease an angry Father, which has misrepresented the whole doctrine of atonement, and caused disbelief and dislike for Christianity. We have to remove speh misunderstandings, and in this respect the Lambeth Conference’s report on the Christian doctrine of Gpd is most valuable, because it gives a view of atonement that, is satisfying to the thinking man and minimises the difficulties aroused by the cruder doctrine.”
