EASTERN SOUTHLAND.
(From Our Own Correspondent.) GORE, January 22. PERSONAL. Guard Haffenden, who has been serving on the Waikaka branch of the railway service, has been transferred .to Gore _in consequence of the alterations being carried out on this line. In connection with the public service entrailce examinations held in November, the following Gore candidates secured passes:—Thomas Wilfred Rhodes, Alan Robertson Grant, Isabella Lyal Bannerman, Colin Archibald Gunn MKenzie, and John Curtin. LAMBS FOR FREEZING. The Mataura freezing works have now commenced operations, and approximately 60 sheep trucks were loaded from the Gore district to-day. From the Mandeville district the consignment totalled 18 trucks of fat lambs, these being the first draft of five neighbouring farmers, who collect about £704 less than last year. In this particular district there is an abundance of feed, and it is stated that thousands of tons will never be used. Turnips and rape are in a flourishing condition, and failures are practically unknown. PICNIC. A contingent of about 300 people left Gore -yesterday to attend Fleming and Co.’s picnic at Oreti Beach, Invercargill.
