THE HARBOUR MOLE.

BLASTING FOR MATERIAL. A SUCCESSFUL OPERATION. Work on the harbour mole is being .carried steadily forward and a considerable step was taken yesterday afternoon when a large quantity of stone was obtained by blasting operations at the Harbour Board’s new quarry at the Heads. For some time past the men have been engaged boring a tunnel for a distance of 30 feet into the rock, and another tunnel 20 feet long at the head of the first, the two excavations being in the form of a letter T. In the cross-arm of this tunnel, 35 cases of the explosive known as quarry monobil were placed, and the whole charge was fired by electricity. The blast, which took place at 4 p.m., is said to have be%n a very satisfactory one, large quantities of stone, in large blocks of the sort most suitable for building a mole, being brought down. This stone will now be carted in trucks to the mole, and the construction work will he carried on. No estimate of the amount of stone made available by the blast has yet been made.
