CENTRAL OTAGO.

( Fuom Our Own Correspondent.) ALEXANDRA, January 23. THE WEATHER. During the week the district has experienced much greater rainfalls than is usual in Central Otago. All the pastures were badly parched, and the ram has greatly improved them. On Monday and Tuesday 102 points of rain fell at Alexandra, and on Wednesday night another 7 points fell. METEOROLOGICAL. SCHOOL COMMITTEE. A special meeting of the Alexandra District High School Committee was held on Tuesday evening, Mr A. M'Kellar presiding. After formal business had been finished, the committee went into the question of improvements to the school grounds, and after some discussion it was decided to apply to the Unemployment Board for a subsidy to enable work to be done by unemployed men in clearing and levelling the school grounds. It was decided to ask for a grant so that about £2O in all would be expended, AVIATION. A large and enthusiastic meeting of citizens was held in Alexandra on Tuesday night for the purpose of discussing aviation matters. The Mayor (Mr W. Bringans) presided, and he said that th s Borough Council had not been lagging in its efforts to arrange a suitable aerodrome for the town. He then called on Captain White, of New Zealand Airways, Ltd., to address the meeting, and in the course of his remarks Captain White said that the main object of his visit was to encourage f< airmindediiess. He Baid he uad landed at Clyde, but had been asked to inspect the site at Alexandra, and atter inspecting it he was satisfied it was an ideal spot for a central aerodrome tor Central Otago. Captain White answered a number of questions, after which the following tentative committee was formed to make arrangements for clearing ground, and the erection of a suitable hangar:—Mr W. Bringans (convener). Messrs D. Provnn, C. B. Sorrell, C. E. Richards, W. R Lloyd Williams, H. Hesson, and H. A’. White. UNEMPLOYMENT. The work provided by grant from the Unemployment Board has now been completed, and there are again a number ot men unemployed. It is hoped the diner* ent building operations in hand will absorb some of them. LAWN TENNIS. February 14: Fruitlands to Roxburgh, Clyde to Cromwell, Wanaka to Alexandra, Tarras a bye. February 21: Alexandra to Clyde. Tarras to Cromwell, Roxburgh a bye. Fat lamb buyers are now operating in the district, but all are working on a limited schedule, and farmers are anxious to get what stock they have away in case of further falls in prices. The lambs are described as being in excellent condition. The buyers are quoting 6d a lb for 361 b lambs. BUILDING ACTIVITY. Considerable building is being undertaken in Alexandra. Three new houses are in the course of erection. The new Presbyterian Church at Earnscleugh is under way, and the new fire station will be commenced at an early date. ACCIDENTS. Mrs W. Vallance, while engaged in household duties, had the misfortune to slip and break her leg. She was admitted to the Dunstan Hospital, where she is progressing favourably. Mrs A. Riach fell and broke a small bone in her leg. She is confined to bed. PERSONAL. Mr A. Anderson, manager of the Bank of New Zealand at Dargaville, and formerly of Alexandra, is at present the guest of Father O’Connell. Mr and Mrs F. W. Lindup, who have been spending a holiday motoring tour, have returned to Alexandra. Mr Andrew Halpine. of the Railways Department, Auckland,’ is at present on a visit to his mother, Mr J. Joyce, editor of the Southland News, Invercargill, is at present on a visit to Alexandra, and is the geust of Mr and Mrs H. P. Cowie. Mr and Mrs A. F. Stewart and family, who have been spending a holiday in Dunedin, have returned home, Mr and Mrs G. A- Mercer, who have been spending a holiday as the guests of Mr and Mrs A. M. Taylor, have returned to Palmerston. Miss F. Vallance. who has been on a holiday to Christchurch, has returned to Alexandra. Mr Webster, of the Public Health Department, Dunedin, and his wife and family are at present on a visit to Alexandra. Mr and Mrs J. O’Kane and family, who have been spending a holiday at Hawea Flat, have returned home. Mrs R. W. Jones and family, of Clinton, are at present on a visit to Alexandra, and are the guests of Mrs W. R. Lloyd Williams. Mrs E. R. Curtis left during the week for Christchurch. Mr W. Riach, of Dunedin, is at present on a visit to his brother, Mr A. Riach. Miss N. Brown, who has been on a visit to Alexandra, returned to Palmerston to-day.
