PALMERSTON NOTES.

(From Our Own Correspondent.) PALMERSTON, January 23. AMATEUR ATHLETICS AND CYCLING. The Palmerston-Waihemo Amateur Athletic and Cycling Club held its first meeting for the season on Wednesday at the Palmerston Domain before a good attendance, considering the inclement weather. The track was rather lieavy. The following are the results:—One Mile Cycle Handicap.—M. Gordon (110yds), 1; H. Palmer (l2oyds), 2; P. Maguire (135yds), 3. Eight competed. Gordon broke away in the last lap, winning easily, a length separating second and third riders. Time, 2min 18sec. 220 Yards Running Handicap.—J. Barber (syds), 1; J. M'Lachlan {scr), 2; A. Ballingall (15yds) 3. Barber won by about two yards, the same distance separating second and third men. Time, 27sec. Ladies’ 100 Yards Handicap.—Miss R. Forbes 1, Mies E. Thomas 2. Time, 14sec. Boys’ Race.—J. Fletcher 1, P. Murray 2, J. Shaw 3. Boys’ Cycle Race. —A. M'Gregor 1, J. Fletcher 2. Two Mile Cycle Handicap. —A. Forrest (scr), 1; H. Palmer (200yds), 2; P. Maguire (210yds), 3. Seven started. Forrest had a hard task riding on his own from scratch, but caught the front riders with two laps to go, led into the straight, and in an exciting finish won by half a wheel, the same distance between second and third. Time, smin 30sec. 440 Yards Handicap.—J. M'Lachlan (20yds), 1; J. Barber (syds), 2; S. Guthrie (30yds), 3. M'Lachlan led into the straight, and hung on to win by inches from Barber, Guthrie being five yards behind. Time, 57sec. Hop, Step, and Jump.—C. Appleby (scr), 34ft Sin, 1; J. M'Lachlan (ecr), 33ft Sin, 2; D. M'Knight (scr), 33ft 3. Seven competed. Girls’ Race. —F. Ross 1, P. Wilson 2, B. Bain 3. One Mile Running Handicap. —T. Pearson (120yds), 1; S. Guthrie (120 yards), 2; E. J. Johnstone (scr), 3. Five starters. The limit men made good use of their handicaps, Pearson going away from Guthrie coming down the straight, and winning by about five yards, third man 30 yards back. Time, 4min 46sec.
