NOTES ON THE RACING.

(From Our Special Reporter.) WELLINGTON. January 22. The second day of the Wellington Cup meeting was held in fine weather, and attracted a very large attendance—a releasing state of affairs—principally due to the assistance of a public holiday. The track had dried up considerably, but was still a bit on the loose side. Mount Boa was unlucky in the January Handicap, as he and Admiral Drake were backing out when the barrier went up, and both were badly left. Mount Boa put up a good performance to get second. After the Nursery Handicap, Voitre, the rider of Fedora, was suspended for one month for causing the interference which brought down Cricket Bat and Solvent. G. Humphries, the rider of Solvent, broke a collarbone. Stanchion was put outside a hurdle at the post for the Wellington Racing Club Handicap, and he whipped round when the barrier rose. Nightmarch ran an excellent race, and -looked a .winner a few strides from the post, but Lady Para and Otairi took the lead in the last couple of strides. Otairi and Stanchion both ran good races under difficulties, and it is regrettable that the latter is one of the most unruly horses ever seen at the barrier. Gay Crest had every chance, but faded out. and so did Merry Damon after setting the pace until well into the straight. Don Jose was with the leaders at the home turn, but did not run up to his first day’s form. The Douro Cup was regarded as a very open race, and a horse had to be rather lucky to get a good run in such a field. Ball Dress covered a lot of ground coming round the top. but won well at the fiaieL Rosehire looked dangerous dowa

the running, but be faded at the finish. Tobaccoland got badly away. Meadow Lark was unlucky in the Metropolitan Handicap, and had difficulty in, getting an opening at the finish. _ Compensation finished well, and won by the narrowest of margins. Tunbridge finished favourite in an excellent betting race on the High Weight Handicap, from which Rich Harvest was withdrawn. Aberfeldy led out from a good start, but Dumblane ,got badly bumped when making the turn out ol the straight. Aberfeldy led Tunbridge and Money Mint along the back, and Dumblane, who had dropped back, was moving up at the far turn. Aberfeldy led round the top from Tunbridge, Money _ Mint, Mister Gamp, and Dumblane running on the outside. Dumblane had taken charge on reaching the false rail, but then Mister - Gamp put in a claim, and, wearing down the southern horse, beat him, by a neck. Money Mint was three lengths away, with .Tunbridge and Aberfeldy next. The bump and covering ground coming into the straight, and finally attempting to win too soon, lost Dumblane the race. A full, card went out for the Trial Plate,' and, despite his many failures, Jaloux started favourite. There was also strong support for Segrave, Saltpot, and Appledore. Segrave soon hit the front with Burnt Note, White Doe, Saltpot, Owlsflight, and Joie de Val. Segrave and Owlsflight were in charge making the home turn, but were supplanted hy Joie de Val, Ephialtes, and Appeal, with Saltpot close up. When well inside the distance Jaloux drew up on the outside, and in a good finish beat Saltpot by a head. Appeal was another short head away, and then in a close bunch came Gold Sand, Joie de Val, and Segrave. Jaloux broke a long run of bad luck by his win, and after being well back in the early stages came with a strong run at the finish. Appeal also ran a good race, as he was at the tail of the field when racing at the far turn about four furlongs from home. Segrave found the distance too far, although he came on again after being headed off at the home turn.' The scratching pen was kept idle in connection with the January Handicap. White Fang started favourite, with Love Song, Full Feather, and Cadland all well hacked. Mount Boa and Admiral Drake were left when the barrier rose to a good line. Caterpillar reached the front inside a half-furlong, and led White Fang, First Acre, Miss Ransom, and First Raid to the far turn. Caterpillar led First' Raid, Cadland, First Acre, and Lovp Song to the home turn. Caterpillar was done shortly after .reaching the straight, where First Raid took charge, and then Cadland, First Acre, and Mount Boa put in a claim. Cadland and Mount Boa headed : First Raid, and Cadland outstayed Mount Boa and Beat him by half a length. First Raid was two lengths away, and then came First Acre, Love Song, Black Duke, and-Vertigern. Black Duke got a bad run, and was, in'.the ruck at the, far turn. Cadland ran a solid race, and, as 1 on ’ the first day, stayed on well when under pressure at the finish. The investors went solidly for Fedora in the Nursery Handicap, and Duleh, Distortion, Solvent, and High Comedy also found plenty of friends. _ High Comedy and Distortion led Oratorian and Solvent to the straight. Just inside the distance, when running in behind the leaders, Cricket Bat fell, and brought down Solvent; Dulen drew up on the outside, and, wearing down the leaders, beat: Oratorian by a head. Distortion was a neck away third, and then came Teller, Richborough, and High Comedy. The favourite was handy to the leaders nearing the straight, but failed at the business end. Dulen had been showing promising form at Wingatui and Invercargill, and. also shaped well in the Fitzherbert Handicap. Nightmarch finished a better favourite than Gay Crest in the Wellington Racing Club Handicap,’and Otairi and Don Jose were evenly hacked. Stanchion was left in a prompt start. Merry Damon, and Gay Crest led past the stand from Compris and Nightmarch, and Stanchion was chasing the field several lengths away. Merry Damon and' Gay Crest raced together down the back in front, of Compris and Nightmarch, and the leadership was unchanged at the far turn, where Otairi had got squeezed back, and Stanchion had joined the. field. Merry Damon and Gay Crest led'round the top, where Don Jose, Lady Pam, and Shrewd had joined the leaders. .Merry Damon drew out from Gay ( Crest coming to the false rail, and Nightmarch and Lady Pam were coming on. A good'finish saw Otairi arriving on the outside, and Lady Pam, staying on well, beat Otairi by a head. Nightmarch was another head away, and then came Merry Damon, Stanchion, and Shrewd.,. Arisus was the only withdrawal from ; the Douro Cup. Tobaccoland started a good favourite, and Lordlike, Playground, Fitzquex, Pythia. and Paratoo were the best backed of the. others. Paratoo was 'the first to break the line, but Pythia took charge after, going a furlong from IParatoo, Fitzquex, and Hawkshaw. Ball Dress, Jayson, Rosshire, Tobaccoland, and Killigrew were handy. Pythia, Fitzquex, Killigrew, Hawkshaw, Eosshire, and Ball Dress were prominent coming round the top, and at the home turn‘Pythia, Fitzquev, Eosshire, Hawkshaw, Killigrew. and Ball Dress were showing the way. Rossshire, Ball Dress, and Killigrew were in front at the false rail. Ball Dress finished on best, and won.by a length from Killigrew, who beat Rosshire by a neck. Then, .close up, came Pythia, Rotation? and Crenna Town. Compensation started favourite, carry? ing £1666 10s, and Bay Acre £934, Meadow Lark £823 10s, and then Palermo and Gesture with over £7OO each in a.good betting race on the Metropolitan Handicap, Autopay, Palermo, Arrow Lad, Arisus, and Compensation were smartest away. Palermo. Autopay, Arisus, and Compensation were in charge as they turned for home, with Meadow Lark in behind them. Mandy joined the leaders as they came to the distance. A great finish ' saw Com-, pensation beat Meadow Lark by a short head, Palermo was half a length. away. ’Bay Acre was close up fourth. Mandy, Gesture. Tenterden, and Arrow Lad were .bunched behind the placed lot. Meadow Lark had to squeeze through at the finish, and with a better run would have won. Charmeuse started a fairly sound favour ite for the Camp Handicap, and a good deal of the wiseacres’ money came for True Shaft. Those who followed True Shaft were on the target, as he led from end to end, and finally stalled off Charmeuse to beat her by a narrow margin in a punishing finish. Charmeuse was not too well placed in the early stages, and had to make ground to get near the winner. Royal Bengal and Killigrew were always with True Shaft, but faded out, and Dermod and Adelphi got nearest the money-catchers at the finish. Solmar finished well back. THIRD DAY’S WEIGHTS.
