Fishermen -who were out during the week-end report but poor success. Two anglers from Balclutha, however, had an unusual experience on the Waiwera. They had not been very successful, but had caught a few trout, and one was cleaning a fair-sized fish at the water’s; edge when he saw a large eel swimming swiftly towards him. He allowed it to grab “ he .tail end of the trout, and when ite teeth had closed in gradually began to pull the eel out of tn© water. The bank was somewhat eloping, and when about a foot and a-half of eel was clear of the water when it released its hold and threw itself on the bank. The fisherman drew a sheath knife and plunged it m , to , e °f the eel, just behind the head. A vital part must have been struck, for the eel fell back into the ivater dead. With the aid of a trout net and a long stick the fishermen got it ashore. It measured 4ft Sin in length and weighed 22£lb, b FARMERS’ UNION. There was a good attendance at the meeting of the Clutha branch of the farmers Union on Saturday night. Mr J. A. Johnston presided. A motion of sympathy with the relatives of the late .Mr J. C. Anderson was passed. Feeling reference was made by Messrs Wood and Ohnstie to Mr Anderson’s long association with the 'union and his active participation in all matters of benefit to the district. The secretary was instructed to send a letter of condolence to Mrs Anderson and family. A satisfactory reply was read from JMr A. C. Cameron, provincial secretary, regarding the appointment of Miss FinJayspn as organiser of the Women’s Division. \ Correspondence was read from D. R. Capon, secretary of the Women’s Division, 1 ahatika branch, and from Mr E. B. Lothian, town clerk Balclutha, relative to the proposed health insurance scheme for South Otago.—lt was decided to arrange for an address to the Tahatika branch as requested. In connection with this scheme the secretary reported that some 27 copies of the prospectus had been torwarded to union branches in the boroughs . and districts.—The president, secretary (Mr James Wood), and Messrs Christie and W. S. Thomson were constituted a committee to deal with any business arising out of the launching of the scheme. Some strong comment was indulged in regarding the alleged waste of money in the construction of the South Island Main Trunk railway, and also in almost all Government departments, and it was resolved to draw the attention of the Government to these matters. It was also resolved to ask the Government lending departments to take steps to have the rates of interest reduced, and to lengthen the term of repayment of loans. Mr Christie again brought up the question of selling wool by grade, the same as meat, butter, cheese, etc., and contended that such a method would bemuch more convenient, would save an enormous sum annually to the producers,, and was an up-to-date and altogether desirable improvement. Several speakers endorsed this view, and it was resolved that every effort be made to formulate a woolgrading scheme, to be brought into force as soon as possible. The secretary was instructed to ask support from other branches. The restrictions proposed to be placed on the use of the Balclutha traffic bridge by the controlling body (the Clutha County Council) were commented on, and being considered a matter affecting the gen end welfare of Balclutha and the surrounding districts, it was decided to write to the Main Highways Board drawing attention to the restrictions, and asking the board to commence the proposed new bridge at once.
