TAIERI RIVER TRUST.

The monthly meeting of the Taieri River Trust was held yesterday in the trust’s chambers at Mosgiel. Cr T. M. Ball, presided, and Crs Walter Black! e, R. A. Kempshell, A. Moore. R. T. Sadd, F. Lyall, J. McKenzie, and P. Johnson were present. REPORTS. The inspector of works reported that the following work had been carried out during the month:—The West Taieri gang had cleaned: M'Leod's drain, and the draiu at Beattie’s, and surfaced the river hank from Momona to Outram. The work in hand consisted of Momona drain. The Maungatua gang had removed the bridge at Wilson’s, and filled in the drain. A new plank had been put in the bridge on Poplar drain at Crossan’s., The Maungatua drain had been mowed from the old pumping station to Lake Askog, and also the dram to Scott’s. The excavator had covered 14 chains since the last report, and had been stopped since Thursday throrugh the creek being flooded. A pipe had been put in through Lee Creek bank, and the creek had been turned into a drain at Marshall’s, but it had to be closed up again on account of flood; it was expected to reopen it on Monday.— Received. ‘

The Works Committee reported having visited the Lee Creek new channel at Marshall's. Mr Marshall had complained of the manner in which the.spoil had been deposited. After consultation Mr Marshall agreed to give them another four feet of ground. In connection with a similar matter on Mr Robertson's ground near Maori Lake, it was decided to attend to it later. ■ Thg committee reported on its interview with Mr Miller regarding gravel.—lt was decided after a discussion that the trust had no liability concerning the gravel mentioned by Mr Miller, lu connection with the leasing of Tatawai and- Waipori Lakes, it was resolved to call tenders for the lease for three years, in four sections. It was decided to speed up the work of the dragline by the men working 10 hours per day, and having the extra time so worked as holidays at Christmas and New Year. A discussion took place on the proposal to increase the number of men working on the drains; but it was decided to carry on as at present. A verbal complaint was before the trust regarding the removal of willows causing a scour in the Waipori bank at Shennan’s.—lt was decided to ask the complainant tp forward the matter in writing, and the Dunedin City Corporation to be written to, when the letter came to hand. CORRESPONDENCE, The Minister of Public Works wrote regarding payment of loan for protective works.—lt was decided that the secretary reply to the Minister, stating that the trust wished to pay off in half-yehrly instalments for 36i years, but that he be requested to defer handing over the liability for 12 months, to enable the trust to have legislation put through to give it'the power to rate on an acreage basis. Gerald. James, Henley, wrote relative to the state of the drain along the road on the edge of his property, and asking that the trust clean it.—The secretary was instructed to inform him that the trust regretted that it could not see its way to clean it.

The clerk, Taieri County Council, wrote notifying the trust that the council had considered the matter of closing the road reserves round Lakes Tatawai. Waipori and Waihola, and advising that the council had agreed to tentative consent; also the matter would receive further consideration when it came before Parliament.—Received. GENERAL.

In connection with the recovery of overdue rates, a discussion took place, and several proposals—lenient and otherwise—were matjfi. Eventually it was decided to instruct the secretary that, if no satisfactory arrangements could be come to with the mortgagees or landlords, to take further steps to recover the overdue rates It was decided that the next meeting be held on the f.'cond Monday in January.
