WAIKOUAITI NOTES.

(From Our Own Correspondent.) WAIKOUAITI, October 1. ANNIVERSARY SERVICES. The anniversarjr services of the Waikouaiti Presbyterian Church were held on Sunday last, the Rev. George Budd, moderator of the assembly and superintendent of home missions, being the preacher for the occasion. Mr Budd took for his text-at the morning service the twenty-seventh verse of chapter 33 of the Book of Deuteronomy: “The* eternal God is thy _ refuge, and underneath are the everlasting arms.” The text of the evening sermon was "For I am proud of the Gospel of Christ.” The afternoon service at Flag Swamp was taken by the same Minister, large congregations being present at each of the services. Mrs A. R. Townsend sang Lewis Carey’s “ Nearer My God to Thee ” at the evening service. ANNUAL CHURCH SOCIAL. The annual social of the Presbyterian Church was held last evening, and although wintry weather prevailed, the church hall was comfortably filled, the minister (the Rev, T. W. Potts) presiding. The Rev. Mr Kilroy, pastor of St.’ Paul’s Presbyterian Church, Oamaru, who was one of the speakers, greatly amused the audience with a succession of humorous anecdotes, this light opening being followed by a very impressive address. The entertainment part of the programme was of a high order, and encores, were frequent. Songs were sung by Mrs M'Curdy, - Miss Warren, Messrs Kershaw and Hicks. Recitations were given by Misses Elwyn Nichol and Rua Holland. Miss Summers played all accompaniments. At the close of the proceedings a vote of thanks was accorded to all who had taken part. A NARROW ESCAPE. ' . Mr J. Tbomey, a power linesman, had a narrow escape from serious accident rccently, when the glass tube of a fuse which he was fitting broke, throwing his bare arm against a live wire. Mr Tooniey was fortunate in escaping with a badly scorched arm. ■ , ———— ■
