SOUTH OTAGO.

BALCLUTHA DISTRICT NEWS. \ (From Oob ‘Own Correspondent.) BALCLUTHA, October St. SCHOOL COMMITTEE. A meeting of the: committee of the Balclutha Primary School last night was attended by Messrs Gormack (chairman), Algie, Culbert, Hayward, 1 Bell, M'Noe, Gray, and Cochrane (secretary). The chairman heartily welcomed the new headmaster (Mr william O’Connor), as it was the first meeting of the committee since hia appointment. The headmaster, in hie report, called attention to various - necessary repairs. The average roll. number , for term two was 375, and the average attendance 342. The roll numbers for the first three weeks of this term had been 37.6, 379, and 378, and the average attendances 364, 365, and 3Q6. The funds of the various sports clubs in the school had been recently consolidated into one sports fund, which it was believed, would serve all branches of school sport more effectively and more economically. It would also obviate the necessity of pupils contributing to separate funds. —It was decided to write to the board, pointing out that the school had lost a grade, although its roll number really entitled it to rank as a 6A school The trouble, of course, was the average attendance, which, in the greater part of the year, was detrimentally affected by climatic conditions, so that the requisite average had not been secured in the last year. In this the school must have a lot in common with other schools in the rural districts of Otago and Southland, and it was asked that the board should endeavour so to alter the system that this and other similarly situated schools should not suffer in. the grading which, by curtailing the staff, tended to lessen their efficiency. It was resolved to contribute two guineas towards the school sports fund. Mr Cochrane reported at some length as to the progress of the school garden, and it was decided to make a collection. ANGLING. Most of the local anglers who visited adjacent streams yesterday returned very tired at night, but happy in the knowledge that they had at least "killed” some fish. The best basket so far reported was that of Mr Arthur Henderson and party (three rods), whose visit to the Waiwera netted 33 fish, some of fair size. A Dunedin man on the Waipahi secured 14 trout, three being threepounders. On the same stream Messrs Kelly and Millis (Balclutha) took 11 good, even-sized fish. The honours for weight, however, seem to have rested easily with the fishers of the Molyneux. Master A. Lowe’s 9Jlb fish was on view to-day and greatly admired. This young angler’s bag for the day numbered 12 fish, including the big one, and two five-pounders, THE RAINFALL. The rainfalb for Balclutha for September amounted to 2.88 in, compared with 2.77 in for the same month last year. CRICKET ASSOCIATION. There was a good attendance of delegatee at the annual meeting of the South Otago Cricket Association held at Balclutha on Tuesday night. In the absence of the president, Mr I. Allan (Milhurn) was in the chair. The annual report and balance sheet were adopted, the balance sheet showing a credit of £6 3s lOd. The following office-bearers were elected: .President, Mr F. M. Nicolson (re-elected): vice-presidents, Messrs D. Finlayson and H. Allan; secretary and- treasurer Mr J. H. Stevenson: auditor, Mr\J. T. Walter; Grade Committee Messrs Stevenson, Allan, and Nicolson; selectors — North side: Messrs W. Hewitson and Allan; south side: Messrs Edwards and Lennox; South Otago selectors—Messrs Lennox, Edwards, and Hewitson. After discussions as to the advisability of playing the competition in two divisiong.or one, it was resolved to leave the decision to the Grade Committee, two divisions to be played if eight teams entered. Opening day for the shield matches was fixed for Saturday, November 1, In regard to the Christmas holidays, it was decided that the final matches this year be played on December 20, to recommence on January 10. It was decided, for the convenience of country players, that representative matches be played during the Christmas vacation and at the end of the club fixtures. LADIES’ GOLF CLUB. In the semi-finals of the A Grade Championship Mrs Poynter won from Miss Noble, and in the finals between Mrs Poynter and Miss Malcolm, Mies Malcolm has a lead of 1 up on the first 18 holes. The match will-be completed within the next few days.

The match at Milton, against the Milton Ladies Oolf Club, which was postponed last week, will take place on Saturday.
