BALCLUTHA DISTRICT NEWS.

(From Our Own Correspondent.) BALCLUTHA, May 8. SCHOOL COMMITTEE. The monthly meeting 0 f the Balelutha Primary School Committee, hel!l last evening, 'was presided over by Mr Gormack. A letter was read from the secretary of the Otago Education Board, stating that the Board would be glad to have a reply to its memorandum of February 28 regarding assistance from the committee towards the cost of new furniture. There was sufficient furniture on hand now to ®f)nip the school, but if the committee did not come to a decision at an early date it would be supplied to other schools. It was resolved that the secretary write to the board pointing out that the committee considered it was the duty of the board to furnish the school, and that in any case the revenue of the committee was inadequate for the proper running of the school, let alone purchasing furniture. . The head master (Mr,, J. F. Hawke) reported that the roll number of the school was gradually improving, and was now 379. A few isolated cases of sacrlet fever had occurred, but in general the health of the pupils had been good, the average attendance for the month of April being 308. He wished to tender his thanks to the members of the working bee who did such valuable work last Saturday towards the scheme of improvements for-the school gardens. Miss Lattimer was acting as relieving teacher until the new appointment was made to the infant room. Eight tenders were received for the supply of coal in truck lots, and that of Mr J. R, Smaill for Kaitangata coal was accepted. Accounts amounting to £43 10s 5d were passed for payment. THE FREEZING WORKS; The volunteer butchers did good w;ork yesterday, the total of sheep and lambs for the day (two shifts) being 3046. Already 154,000 head have been put through, and it is expected that the total for the season will easily top 200,000.
