RACING NEWS. By Sentinel. • Nominations for the D.J.C. winter meeting are due to-day. Taramoa (G. Dempster) was schooled over four brush fences on the Southland track on Tuesday, and showed that he has not forgotten the ’chasing game (says the Southland Times). The Solferino gelding All Comment, owned by Mr L. Kelcher, has joined F. irilford’s stable and is being qualified for hunters’ races. At Longchamps (France) the electric totalisator handled £114,000 for a day recently—the record at Auckland is £150,000 for a day. Acceptances for the Southland meeting are due to-day. Great Star has been kept in steady work since the Easter meeting, and is to be nominated for the Dunedin meeting. i The Hawke’s Bay trainer, J. H, Jefferd, is contemplating a trip to Australia in the early _ spring, with a team to include Don Quixote and Cylinder. F, P, Claridge has taken over Rascal and Koyal Mint, who have been trained lately by their owner, Mr E. D. Robinson, in North Canterbury. They are a pair who should improve rapidly. The South Canterbury steeplechaser, Fabriano, has gone amiss and P. T. Hogan found it necessary to leave him at home when he went north with Double Soult, who is to race at Egmont this week. It will be bad luck if Fabriano’s trouble is serious, as be looked certain to do well in steeplechases _ during the winter. Returned racing folk by the Maunganui on Tuesday were able to furnish striking examples of the financial position in Australia, and how heavily the load of taxation is pressing (says the Evening Post). This was reflected by the tone of the market at the yearling sales. Personal experiences confirmed that. The State’s share of Nightmareh’e winnings amounted to about £I4OO. His trainer's percentages did not escape the taxgatherer, who reaped another £BO from A. M'Aulay. The extreme was reached in the case of a stable employee who hiid charge _of the horse that competed at Randwick, and did not win. Taxation on the attendant’s wages during his short stay at Sydney was assessed at 10s, and was duly collected. TROTTING. ' By Sentinel. Jean M'Elwyn was badly boxed during part of the last round in the Prince or Wales Handicap, but once she got clear she showed , a fine clip. She is one of the most consistent pacersrin commission. Stand By was one of the unlucky runners in the Bayfield Handicap yesterday and so may be well supported if he is sent to the post to-morrow. He has improved a lot recently. The Shrew showed speed in her race yesterday, but failed to stay. \ Author Jinks was slow away in the Prince of Wales Handicap, and never at any stage of the race showed the' touch of brilliancy that he possesses. Great Bell did not look at her best yesterday, and after showing out at the start of the St. Clair Handicap never looked like being placed. The Boh Patch mare Boneta' has speed, but she is not yet solid enough for the better classes. Sunchild paced a solid race in the Beach Handicap, and he was largely responsible for the defeat of Peter Daunt, as he kept the latter at his top speed once he got alongside of him and caused him to weaken in the straight. Alva Lass finished well in the Renown Handicap and with a better run in the early stages might have made the finish more interesting. She is a smart mare and she has shown considerable improvement lately. The riders and drivers at Forbury Park yesterday were loud in their praises of the improvements recently carried out in the vicinity of the spot from which the mile qnd, a-half races are started. ’’■The track can how accommodate very big fields without any crowding. Mr C. D. Hudson has decided not to send his colt, Todd Lonzia, against the watch at Forbury Park'again to-morrow in an endeavour to set a fresh record, as he is well satisfied with the figures set by the youngster yesterday. Two new additions to Nelson Price’s stable are the pacers Great Abdullah and Carbine Direct. Great Abdullah was for some time trained by G. M'Kendry at Addington, and showed fair form up to a mile and a-half. Carbine Direct is a good stayer but unreliable. C. E. Lindsay is now located in Rangiora, and has disposed of most of his horses: He has retained Talaro and ‘Harvest Child, and both the. pacers are in work on the North Canterbury Racing Club’s course Talaro and Harvest Child are both progressing satisfactorily in their work, and they will be racing early in the new season. The two-year-old pacer Goldworthy is | now trained byj, J, Kennerley (says the Christchurch Times). She showed a lot of speed'in her work when in training at New Brighton, and was made favourite for the Mina Handicap at the Cheviot Club’s meeting at the end of March. Unfortunately, she lost her driver soon after the start, so that no estimate of her speed in a race could be formed. Goldworthy is by Guy Parrish from Annie Amelia, by O.Y.M. from that fast pacer Maid of the Forest. Goldwprthy has been nominated for both the trotting events at the Ashburton Racing, Club’s meeting, which is to be held at the end of the month.
