WANAKA NOTES. —.-«. . (From Our Own Correspondent.) PEMBROKE, May C. THE WEATHER. The light showers which fell last weekend and the unsettled conditions then prevailing were not, unfortunately, the forerunners of further rain. The week has been one of clear skies with light frosts at night. The rainfall since January has amounted to barely five inches, and present indications point to a further period of drought. DUGK SHOOTING. A party of sportsmen opened the duck shooting season at Cattle Flat, and secured 20 ducks. The party reports that ducks were scarce and timid, and the prospects of further shooting are not promising. GOLF. The second competition of the season was played on Saturday last for trophies presented fay Mr James Faulks. A notable feature of* the men's competition was the gross score put up' by J. Perrow, who completed the 18 holes in 74, beating the previous record, held by J. Brooks, by one stroke. The following are the scores:— Ladies, 10 holes.—Miss F. Perrow 48 —15—33, Mrs Perrow 54—18—36, Mrs. Collings 47—10—37, Miss Gillespie 49 12—37, Miss M. Wilson 62—23—39, Miss M. Perrow 60—21—39, Miss Mackay 61 Miss T. The Wanaka team played the first round in the competition against Cromwell, at Cromwell, on Saturday, and although defeated by 10 points to 17, the Wanaka players showed promise of becoming a strong side after a few more games together. For Wanaka, I. Mackay potted a goal, and May and Norman scored tries. For Cromwell, lan Jolly (2), Nicholson (2), and Rodgers scored tries, one of which was converted. v SCHOOL GROUNDS IMPROVEMENT. The efforts of the School Committee, aided by the energy and initiative of the new schoolmaster (Mr Tait), to raise funds for the improvement of the school grounds, were successful beyond expectation in their first venture, some £ls being raised for the purpose. The proprietors of the picture show granted the net proceeds from Saturday night's screening, after which a dance was held, both entertainments being largely attended. The dance music was provided by Mrs F. Thomson (piano)', Mrs Dickie (violin), and Mr Poole (xylophone and drums). Mr Tait, in an interval during the dancing, thanked those present for their attendance, and assured them that the best use would be made of the proceeds.
