TAPANUI NOTES.

(Froje Odr Own Correspondent.) TAPANUI, May 6. BOROUGH COUNCIL. The monthly meeting of the Tapanni Borough Council was held on Monday evening, when there were present the Mayor (Mr W. R, Quin), and Grp M'Donald, Duff, Naylor, Wright, Edgar, and Varcoe. Mr W. Spillane wrote drawing the council's attention to the gorse and broom on the racecourse reserve, and ashed that this be cut before he took possesion.— To be informed that the council could not see its way to take any action in the matter. Mr John Preston (Waikouaiti) submitted a ne\y system of allocating heavy traffic license fees in highways districts Nos. 10 and 17. which showed that the borough would receive £8 as against £1 12s lid. He pointed out that lorry drivers running out into the country did not keep a correct mileage.—Received. Mr T. L, Floyd, postmaster, wrote asking that the public clock on the Post Office should be repaired. He pointed out that as the clock was the property of the borough, his department could not undertake to repair it. the cost of which would be 10s 6d.—lt was decided to pay the cost of repairs. Mr Charles Bathgate applied for permission -to erect a garage on his property in Bushy Hill street, and also for a supply of gravel to the entrance thereto.—Permission to erect garage was granted, one load of gravel to he supplied. Mr J D. Edgar and Miss Cleghorn applied for a town water supply for domestic purposes.—Granted ou the usual conditions. On the motion of the Mayor, seconded by Cr Naylor, it was decided to strike the following rates for the ensuing year: A general rate of 2s in the f, a special lighting rate of 3d in the £, and a special hospital rate of 3d in the f. It was resolved that the six months' rent owing for a borough lease he written off. _ .. The Reserves Committee's action in advertising the commonage lease" (50 acres) for grazing purposes for one year only was approved. The Works Committee's action in agreeing to the completion of 18 yards of concrete footpath in Maple street in front of Mr J. S. Vnrcoe’s premises was confirmed. Mr Varcoe’j? offer of £4 towards the cost of the work was accepted with thanks. The Cemetery Committee was autho-

rised to purchase a new duck tarpaulin for use at the cemetery. The Works Committee was authorised to purchase a truck of 12, 0, and 4-inch pipes for borough use. Accounts amounting to £IOO 19s 3d were passed for payment. FOOTBALL. The district banner competition was opened on Saturday- under ideal weather conditions, and if the form shown on Saturday is any criterion, the publieis assured of witnessing some good football as the season progresses t and the players settle down The match between Tapanui and Kelso was played at Kelso before a small attendance, and after a keen game Tapanui, who was only' able to muster 13 players, defeated Kelso by nine points to six points. The outstanding players for the winners were Lischner, Moffitt, Ottrey, Parsonage, and Peat, the two latter being new members, the former hailing from the North Island, whilst Peat last year played for the Tabari Club. Lischner scored two tries and Whiteley one_. for the winners, whilst Barron earned Kelso six points by kicking two good goals from free kicks. Barron. Service, and M'lntosh played well for the losers, both on defence and attack. The Heriot and Waikaka match was played 'at Waikaka in the presence of a fair number of spectators, when there were bright patches of play. Heriot proved too strong for Waikaka. running out winners by 25 points to 5. Tries for the winners were scored by Oliver, Kydd, Walker, L. and D. Perriam, L. Perniam converting his own try, whilst Ottrey converted a try and kicked a penalty goal. For Waikaka Turnbull scored and Morrison converted. TAPANUI DISTRICT PATRIOTIC SOCIETY.

The annual meeting of the Tapanui District Patriotic Society was held in the Town Hall on Thursday evening, the chairman. Mr W. H. Quin, presiding over a good attendance of members. The balance slreet, which showed a credit balance of £266 5s 9d,. was adopted. The following committee was elected for the ensuing year:—Messrs A. Robertson, George Howat, M. M'Auley, W. H. Lusk, W. K. Gill, K. Rodger, W. Pringle, J. D. Rodger, I. D. Revie, James Edgar, W. R. Quin, W. W. Mackie, and Dr Robertson. Mr W. R. Quin waa reelected chairman, as was Mr J. D. Rodger secretary and treasurer. The chairman, secretary, aud Mr Alexander Robertson were elected an Emergency Committee. The* amount paid out for the year by way of assistance to soldiers amounted to £l4 15s 6d, whilst the revenue was £l2 12a (interest £3 12s lOd, and members’ subscriptions £3) - SCHOOL COMMITTEE. The monthly .meeting of the Tapanui District High School Committee was held in the’ school on Friday evening. A communication was received from the Otago Education Board advising that the committee’s offer of 6s per head per pupil had been accepted for' the purpose of providing the new class rooms with modern furniture. The headmaster (Mr H, M. Stevens) reported having received from the National Mortgage and Agency Co. of N.Z., Ltd., a framed wool exhibit to be bung in the headmaster’s room. The Committee decided to acknowledge the gift, and it was arranged that at a later date a demonstration in the classing aud handling of wool should be given to, the senior boys.'.Mr W. K. Gill was appointed secretary and treasurer. The election of Mr S. J. Drew (Macraes) as successor to Mr R. King, was confirmed. f ■
