MILTON NOTES.

(From Our Own Correspondent.) AIILTON, August 19. GOVERNMENT SUBSIDY. Following the example set by Fort Chalmers Borough Council, the Alilton Borough Council has deemed to apply to the Government for a subsidy on moneys raised by the local Poppy' Day collection, which was refunded by the Dunedin R.S.A. and subsidised by the Borough Council in providing work for local ex-servicemen on permanent improvements at the borough reserves. LADIES’ HOCKEY. A bright and sparkling exhibition of hockey was given on the local Domain ground on Saturday afternoon, when Milton A (winners of the South Otago Association’s shield) and Trainin'*- College (winners of the Dunedin Senior Grade competition) tried conclusions. The local players were, prior to the

match, somewhat pessimistic concerning their chances against Dunedin’s premier team, but their misgivings quickly disappeared. From the opening bully-off Milton rushed play into the College circle, and scored the solitary goal of the match within two minutes from the commencement. Milton kept up the pressure throughout the first spell The College players took charge in the second half, but could not penetrate the sound defence of the Milton back division. The pace was a cracker throughout, Milton winning a hard-fought game by one goal to nil. MAGISTRATE’S COURT. This morning’s monthly sitting of the Milton Magistrate’s Court provided another brief sitting for Mr H. J. Dixon, S.M, The four civil cases were settled out of court or struck out. The only case for adjudication was an information by Henry Adams, Bruce County inspector, against Sydney Alfred George Smith, of breach of motor-lorry regulations, in driving a motor lorry for the conveyance of goods without having obtained a license to do so. The defendant pleaded guilty, and was fined 20s, with court costs 10s, and solicitor’s fee (21s). Y.M.C.A. ATHLETICS. - In tiie indoor athletic sports meetings to all Y.M.C.A.’s throughout the Dominion the Milton centre put up a very creditable performance, considering the fact tliAt the competitors had undergone very little practice. Ten branches competed, with the fbllowing results:— Palmerston North, 16 points (five firsts, one third), 1; Masterton, 8 points (one first, two seconds, one third), 2; Wanganui (two seconds), and Christchurch (one second, two thirds), tied for third place with, four points; Milton, 3 points (one second, one third), 5; Auckland and Wellington (one third each) tied for sixth position, with one point. The other competing branches of the associatxon were unplaced. Milton branch had the highest percentage of eligible membership competing with 07 per cent.; Palmerston North was second, with 78.5 per cent.
