(From Our Own Correspondent.) WAIKOUAITI, August 30. CARD PARTY. The weekly card party held in St. John’s School Hall, continues to be popular, about 70 people taking part in the games of Wednesday last. Mrs Murray won the first prize for ladies, and Mrs W. Hallutn, jun., the second prize, the first aud,.second prizes for men being won by Mr Robertson and Mr R. Bell respectively. DAIRYING. For the first part of the past dairying season the Waikouaiti Dairy Factory paid out Is 8d per lb of butter fat and la 7d for the latter part of the season. The further penny per lb now' available brings the average price to roughly Is SJd, and the Goodwood has already paid out Is 3d, As only about 20 per cent, of last season’s make of cheese of the Dominion was sold outright in the early spring, this means, roughly, that out or every 100 factories 20 will pay about Is 9d and 80 up to Is 6d per lb of butter fat. Cows are coming in earlier than usual this year, and the Waikouaiti factory will open for the season on September 2, instead of in the middle of the month, as Is usual. FARMERS’ UNION SOCIAL. At the invitation of the committee of the local branch of the Farmers’ Union, about DO members, inclufug many ladies, gathered on Saturday last for a social evening. After a brief welcome by the president (Mr Charles Hall), jn which he expressed pleasure in seeing so many ladies of the Palmerston branch present, progressive euchre was indulged in. Mrs Arthur Heckler wou the first prize for ladies with the loss of one game. Mr Timmins annexed *the men’s prize. Songs were given by Mrs Wedge and Mrs Robson, of Palmerston, Miss Reid and Miss Summers, and Messrs Reid and M'Olymont, of Waikouaiti. On being invited to address the gathering, Mr John Preston apologised for the absence of the general secretary for Otago (Mr Cameron) and of Mr John Clark. Mr Preston would have appreciated the honour of introducing Mr Clark, for he was one of the founders of the Farmers’ Union of Otago and the father of its insurance company. The speaker reminded members that much of the work of the union was carried out in a very unobtrusive manner, .and results showed that the work was being done well. Especial praise was due to lady members of the union jn some parts of the North Islandf through whose efforts the wives of mauy backblock farmers had many benefits. The - South Island representative on the Dairy Board (Mr W. Lee) took the opportunity of explaining the new selling agreement of the Dairy Exporters’ Association. The president of the Palmerston branch (Mr George Giric) and the hon. secretary (Mr W. R. Wedge) expressed pleasure at being present, and complimented the Waikouaiti branch on the innovation. Mrs W. R. Wedge, the president of the women's section of the Palmerston branch, made brief reference to the Wellington conference, which she attended as a delegate. “ Opportunities such as the present,” said the speaker, “ should always be encouraged, as they tend to bring about a better understanding among the women of country districts and result in increased membership and better organisation.” Mr Hall thanked all who had contributed to the success of the evening, and especially Mr Ross, the hon. secretary of the branch on whom the work of arrangement for the gathering had fallen. FLAG SWAMP SCHOOL. The fiftieth anniversary of the Flag Swamp School will fall due this year, and it is expected that the jubilee will be celebrated during Christmas week. The committee appointed to carry out the [ arrangements, with Mr S. Hagan as chairman and Mr P.awson as secretary, has been industriously organising entertainments during the winter months for the purpose of raising the necessary funds. The most recent of these, held in the Goodwood Hall on Wednesday evening last, was financially the best. Mr John Preston presided. The programme included items by Mcsdames Burrows, Williams, Sutherland, and Wedge, Miss Phillips, the Misses Boss and Phillips, and Mr M'Clymont. bliss Morrison accompanied the singers, and Mr R. Cameron played the pipes for the Scottish items. A very successful dance followed the concert.
