AUSTRALIA v. NEW ZEALAND. VISITORS WIN FIRST TEST. (Pee United Press Association.) WANGANUI. July 27. The Australian hockey team won the first test match against New Zealand by one penalty coal to nil.

The visitors had the better of the play, and the score would have been greater in their favour, but for the solid home defence. The home team were weak in the forward line, notably in the outside positions. ■ The Australians gave a glimpse of their swift passing rushes, and after they had invaded the circle three times, the New Zealand goalie stopped a hot one, and later saved with a fine shot to the side line. The Black forwards got within striking distance, but the Australians’ defence was sound. New Zealand had a life when Nettleton shot from close in, the goalie glancing the ball behind the net. Another Australian attack was cleared by Spiers, who was proving a tower of strength in the back line The Australians continued to have the better of the play, but half time sounded without a score.

When play was resumed, the visitors met with some ill luck in the way of casualties, Wanless having to retire for a few minutes to have his nose patched up, and C. Cornie was out of action for a few minutes with a head injury. The Australians got going again, and Hudson shot from each of the forward scrambles in the circle, but the ball was turned over the goal lino. The visitors kept up the pressure and were frequently dangerous. A shot from Nettleton skimmed over the top of.the goal. New Zealand took a turn at attack and Thrush put the hall over the top of the goal. New Zealand were penalised for obstruction in front of tbe goal and in a penalty bully, the visitors were awarded a penalty goal for a further obstruction. Amid great enthusiasm the home team set up a vigorous attack at the goal mouth, but the ball went behind. New 'Zealand kept up the pressure with two penalty corners, hut. the Australians found relief from a free hit. Time was called with New Zealand again dangerous in front of the goal. The final score was; Australian 1 goal. Now Zealand .. .. -. Nil.

LADIES’ HOCKEY. The following table shows the positions of the teams in the senior competition: —

TRAINING COLLEGE v. OTAGO. College played a closely-contested game with Otago, who were one short until the second spell. College, hy good combined work, was four goals up at half time. Otago played a great game in the second spell, and scored four goals, to College's 1. On the run of the play Otago was unlucky to lose. The final result was; College 5 Otago 4 Mr E. Jory was the referee. , TRIANGLE v. EX-HIGH SCHOOL. The game between Triangle and ExHigh School was a proper mud scramble, the ground being in parts tinder water. The state of the ground spoilt many chances of scoring, the ball stopping dead in the slush. _ Triangle managed to find the net twice in each spell, and kept ExHigh on the defensive most of the game. Triangle 4 Ex-High Nil Mr J. A. Robinson was the referee. MOMONA v. TRAINING COLLEGE 11. Momona_ played Training College II on Oval No. 1, aiulithe score of one ad was fair indication of the game. Both sides scored early in the first spell, but poor shooting later on last many chances for both sides. Motnona was attacking strongly for the last 10 minutes, but was unable to penetrate the defence. Momona 1 Training College II 1 Mr D. Woodfield was referee. UNIVERSITY A v. TECHNICAL OLD GIRLS. Logan Park was in a deplorable condition when University A met Technical Old Girls on Saturday. University had most of the attack, but good back play nullified their efforts. Technical was playing a good spoiling game, but on three occasions University beat the opposition with good shots. University A g Technical Old Girls'.. .. Nil Mr D.. Miller was tne referee. HIGH SCHOOL v. TAIERI. ischool played a very evenly-contested game with Taiori, the result being in doubt right up till the final whistle. KAIKORAI v. UNIVERSITY B. Kaikorai beat University B on a field not fit for play. Kaikorai attacked from bully, and had most of the attack.
